On our flagship Schools Partnership Programme (SPP), clusters of schools conduct peer reviews and support one another’s improvement – leading to improved system leadership and greater accountability in England’s schools. In a new report, Associate Professors at University College London (UCL), David Godfrey and Dr Bernardita Munoz-Chereau, present a summary of a three-year project conducted by the UCL Centre for Educational Leadership evaluating the SPP. Funded by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), the report outlines the main components of the SPP, the research project’s key findings, and evidence-backed recommendations for policymakers and school leaders on using peer-led initiatives for school improvement. Data for Delivery (D4D), a central part of our TARGET programme which we co-led with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education, collected real-time, accessible and reliable data on school management, learning assessments and teacher behaviours across the country’s education system. TARGET’s innovative D4D programme has transformed teaching practices and learning outcomes across Ethiopia by: - improving the quality and availability of school management information - increasing data system competencies - enabling system-wide capacity building - supporting leaders and teachers to make evidence-informed decisions. TARGET was funded by the UK government and supported the World Bank-managed multi-donor trust General Education Quality Improvement Programme for Equity (GEQIP-E). It was a privilege to join our Education Development Trust colleagues in Zimbabwe last month for their inaugural Learning Event. It brought together key players in the country’s education sector, including our highly valued partners: Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, UNICEF, Think Equal and Plan International. I delivered a virtual introductory address to commend our EDT team’s groundbreaking research, partnerships and global impact, and emphasised our commitment to improving life chances through education and skills. We have a proven track record of success in Sub-Saharan Africa, extending across not only #Zimbabwe but #Rwanda, #SierraLeone, #Ethiopia and #Kenya. Our TEACH programme in particular has reached over 68,000 teachers in Zimbabwe and is expected to impact one million pupils by the end of the programme. To continue our important work, we know it is vitally important to collaborate effectively with our partners. It was also excellent to see our colleagues in Kenya coming together with key partners for a social networking event to connect, share insights, discuss opportunities for collective action, and lay the groundwork for a foundational learning coalition. It was also a great opportunity to celebrate the strides Kenya has made in foundational learning, and promote our new early childhood education programme in Kenya, INSPIRED. Thank you to all our colleagues and partners for two fantastic events that showcase EDT’s continued commitment to bringing about lasting educational change in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Tests like the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) reveal how well students across the world perform in critical subjects such as reading, mathematics and science. For countries aiming to boost their PISA scores, particularly those consistently underperforming, one promising path is curriculum reform that applies the principles of cognitive load theory (CLT), pioneered by John Sweller. In this article, Dr Richard Churches, our Director of Research and author of the book Neuroscience for Teachers, and Dr David Johnson of the University of Oxford, discuss the potential of using CLT as part of curriculum design. Focusing on a CLT-friendly approach to curriculum reform can free up the time needed to teach the sort of lessons that the higher-level PISA questions demand. Read here: https://lnkd.in/ew_SPjxx

Professionally trained school leaders play a pivotal role in learning outcomes. The National School Leadership Training (NSLT) was one of the key pillars of the TARGET programme, which we co-led with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education. TARGET was funded by the UK government and supported The World Bank-managed multi-donor trust General Education Quality Improvement Programme for Equity (GEQIP-E). Taking a competencies-based approach, TARGET’s NSLT upskilled over 11,000 school leaders across Ethiopia, with almost 100% of them improving their practice. The country’s Minister of Education, Berhanu Nega, praised the training and emphasised the importance of continuing it for long-term impact. The NSLT has brought about widespread change across Ethiopia’s education system. Find out more about TARGET here: https://lnkd.in/eqcJrPqt

    • Graphic displaying a photograph of Berhanu Nega speaking at an EDT event. A text quote on the graphic reads:

"TARGET's NSLT training should not be a one-time event but a transformative catalyst for change that equips school leaders with essential skills and knowledge to enhance teaching capabilities."
His Excellency Professor Berhanu Nega, Minister of Education, Ethiopia
