Working together to end homelessness
About us
Homeless charity and social enterprise working together to end homelessness. Our secondhand furniture social enterprise helps fund accommodation, support and meaningful employment for 42 formerly homeless individuals in Hertfordshire. With five stores located across the county (Hertford, St Albans, Boxmoor, Tring and Harpenden) our 42 companions help run our successful secondhand furniture stores selling a mixture of restored furniture, large, medium and small furniture, electrical items and white goods, clothing, books, and much more. We offer free collection of donated items and affordable delivery. Any items we cannot sell or are beyond economical repair are broken down and recycled.

We were honoured to be invited to British Institute of Interior Design Awards as special guests of our charity partner, Abels Moving Services. The prestigious removals company invited our Business Development Manager, Gemma Beckett, to the highly regarded awards held in the stunning Drapers Hall, in the City of London last Thursday. Celebrating the very best of British design, the BIID Awards showcase the finest interior design projects completed across the UK. Winners were awarded across seven regional categories, celebrating every type of interior design, from the largest commercial project to the smallest residential dwelling. On today's #WorldHomelessDay we're thrilled to share our community’s significant involvement in Emmaus UK's National Assembly, held at the University of Warwick on Sunday and Monday (6 & 7 October). #WorldHomelessDay serves as a platform to celebrate good works, benchmark progress and advocate for improved policies and funding that can help prevent and end homelessness, all of which formed part of our National Assembly. Our companions' hard work and progress was celebrated as part of this year’s theme, ‘Amplifying Our Action: The Power of Partnerships’. Our community was proud to share our involvement in the film ‘I’m Still Here’, featuring our companion Chris, which was screened at the Assembly. Powerfully demonstrating the strength of partnerships. ‘I’m Still Here’, captures the selfless acts of kindness by volunteers from homelessness charity Under One Sky, who supported homeless people like Chris during the Covid-19 lockdown. Our community was also involved in hosting three Mosaic Making workshops at the event, thanks to our talented companion Rosemary, who is now sharing her skills with other communities. Our companions also produced stunning wooden awards for the Community Hero Awards at the event, kindly engraved by Trotec Laser engraving technologies. We also featured in a UK-wide Community Partnership Showcase reel, which was rolled out on big screens at the venue, giving examples of collaborations that have enhanced Emmaus communities. These included CPL Aromas, Abels Moving Services & Herts For Refugees. You can read the full story here:

We are hugely grateful to our friends at CRASH - Construction Industry's Charity – for making our companions’ rooms more energy-efficient and comfortable. Thanks to CRASH’s construction partners, VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd, our community bedrooms have been modernised and improved with new self-regulating radiators, energy efficient lighting and washing basins. A massive thank you to VolkerFitzpatrick for helping deliver this fantastic work and to CRASH for their ongoing support. Pictured (left to right) in front of our van are: Ruth Marsden and Vipesh Mistry (both from CRASH, Steve Hodkinson (The Worshipful Company of Plumbers), Trisha Pickersgill (CRASH), and Duncan Lewis (our Chief Executive). #emmaushertfordshire #crashcharity #crashcharityprojects #CrashCharity #thankyouforyoursupport #thankyou #makingadifference #HomelessnessMatters

We've received a huge boost after being chosen by prestigious removals company, Abels Moving Services, as its chosen charity. Based in Potters Bar, Abels started to provide their moving services to the Royal Household in 1981, and in 1988 was honoured to be the first removals and storage company to be nominated ‘By Appointment’ to Her Late Majesty the Queen. Abels have chosen to work with us in recognition of the vital work we do to support people who have experienced homelessness with a home, tailored support, companionship and work opportunities. They are making their clients aware of our work and were incredibly supportive by providing lots of furniture and items ahead of the opening of our new store in Letchworth in May. A huge thank you to Abels for their fantastic support! Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/d4ynCg5X

A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers, Keith, Rob and Tom from Bunzl UK and Ireland for transforming part of our garden today! The gang worked extremely hard cutting down the jungle-like vegetation next to our recycling yard, transforming the area at the side and back of our storage marquee. It looks so neat and tidy now, what a difference! Thank you guys for all your hard work today, we really appreciate it! 🙏💚 #bunzl #Bunzl #volunteersrock #volunteerspirit #volunteersmakeadifference #volunteers #thankyou #thankyouforyourhelp

Thanks to the Hertsad for their great coverage of our recent £50,000 funding boost from CPL Aromas, which enabled us to appoint our new Community Support Manager, Harley Scott. Harley’s crucial new role is allowing us to provide better support services and more positive outcomes for our current and new companions, the formerly homeless people living in our community home. Harley will be leading our support team to provide our companions with specialist tailored support for complex needs such as addiction and trauma, as well as increasing wellbeing activities. The latest donation is in addition to £25,000 donated to us by CPL Aromas last year which was also used to strengthen our support services for companions. A huge thank you to CPL Aromas for their incredible support! 🙏 💚 https://lnkd.in/e84xXSkP
