🤔How do UK citizens value reducing energy demand in relation to their well-being? In this paper, Tim Foxon, Donal Brown, Marie Claire Brisbois and Gerardo A. Torres Contreras show that people highly value the co-benefits of energy-saving, suggesting that policy should consider these factors to support a shift toward a 'wellbeing economy' in energy decisions🌍💡 Read the paper here: https://lnkd.in/dDXVr7KB

Research for an affordable and secure low energy future
About us
The Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC) undertakes research for an affordable and secure low energy future. Our interdisciplinary research programme identifies evidence-based energy demand reductions for a sustainable and more equitable future. We address the unique opportunity to realise benefits from energy demand reductions in industry, businesses, transport and homes. We explore the delivery of integrated technological and social change to rapidly reduce emissions, secure prosperity, reduce inequality and improve quality of life. We work closely with partners from policy, industry, civil society and academia. EDRC is supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council [grant number EP/Y010078/1].

A good week for our research group with Manon Burbidge publishing the first paper from her PhD on housing, asylum and energy deprivation among refugee communities - a topic that has received almost no attention to date. Congratulations, Manon for this excellent paper (in a top housing journal no less)! ⭐️👏 Grateful to co-supervisors Karen Lucas and Saskia Warren for their collaboration on this project as well as the Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC) for their support.
I'm really excited to share that the first paper from my PhD, "Hostile Environments: Housing and Asylum Policies as Drivers of Energy Deprivation Among UK Refugee Communities" is out in the world, available open access! In the paper, we propose an explanatory framework towards understanding the drivers of energy issues experienced by refugee communities living in the UK, examining how hostile environment asylum approaches and neoliberal housing policy combine to produce poverty and vulnerability for those seeking sanctuary. Big thanks also to my co-authors, Stefan Bouzarovski, Karen Lucas and Saskia Warren. Available here: https://lnkd.in/enBJX3hz - I look forward to hearing thoughts and comments on it!

"Universal warmth: The case for protecting energy as a basic right" A recent Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC) blog by Madeleine Pauker (PhD Researcher at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) in the Business School) discusses the recent policy shift towards more targeted winter fuel payments. The blog builds on another blog by Professor Gesche Huebner, which advocates for an equity-driven approach, where universal programmes are scrapped in favour of targeted support to those who need it most. Spreading out the demand for energy across the day and minimising peak time demand is becoming increasingly important for managing the grid. Many flexibility services reward customers for reducing their energy consumption during peak times. But will this work for everyone? We wanted to better understand how prepayment customers - often more likely to be on low incomes, renting, elderly, or disabled - experience flexibility services. We worked with energy supplier Utilita Energy to conduct interviews with smart prepayment meter customers. We found that: 💰Financial savings were the main motivation for participation in Power Payback events, and people valued even small savings. 👶Household make-up played a big role in flexibility, with larger households having greater potential for savings but facing challenges due to caring responsibilities and established routines. 💡While people appreciated the benefits of Power Payback, including opportunities to learn about energy and have good environmental impacts, there was generally low awareness of its underlying reasons.
