UK-HyRES: Hub for Research Challenges in Hydrogen and Alternative Liquid Fuels

The confirmation this afternoon from the Chancellor, Rt Hon Rachel Reeves, that £5.8 billion will be allocated for green hydrogen, carbon capture, ports, gigafactories, and green steel is a huge step forward for the UK’s clean energy future.   With National Wealth Fund's greater risk appetite and financial capacity, there’s real potential to drive innovation, especially in dual-use technologies that support both green hydrogen and UK defence & security.   Our HEA members are keen to see further clarity on how the green hydrogen sector can access this capital to accelerate market growth. Our Chief Scientific Officer, Subhasish Mukerjee, delivered a plenary lecture at the UK-HyRES: Hub for Research Challenges in Hydrogen and Alternative Liquid Fuels Stakeholder Showcase in Bath last week. UK-HyRes is a hub seeking to advance the British low-carbon fuel industry, and includes experts from academia, industry, and policy to discuss the latest advancements driving the clean energy transition.    Titled ‘Ceres’ Technology for Clean Power and Green Hydrogen’, Subhasish's talk covered Ceres’ innovative solid oxide cells and their benefits for energy production in both efficiency and sustainability. Ceres’ SteelCell technology operates at lower temperatures than other solid oxide technologies and uses commodity steels, which makes the technology resilient and cost-effective.     UK-HyRES is funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and uses interdisciplinary research to advance hydrogen and hydrogen-based, low-carbon liquid fuel projects.  We are honoured to be a part of the conversation and research driving the British low-carbon fuel industry, which will help the UK to reach its net zero goals.   Subhasish also joined a UK delegation representing Hy-Res and HI-ACT to the British Embassy Berlin, to exchange with German hydrogen experts and further develop UK-German research and innovation cooperation. An excellent second day at the UK-HyRES: Hub for Research Challenges in Hydrogen and Alternative Liquid Fuels event in Bath where I represented the Hydrogen Energy Association. Today the focus shifted from the great work that researchers are carrying out in the #hydrogen space to the challenges that industry players are facing. I enjoyed the contributions from and active discussions with Dan Graham at GKN Aerospace, Subhasish Mukerjee at Ceres, Helen Brocklehurst at Aerospace Technology Institute, Thomas Lee at HyHAUL Mobility, Vince White at Air Products, Matthew Shearn at Innovation Advantage and James McNaughton at HydroStar.
