Great to see our joint letter with Royal Academy of Engineering published in today's Financial Times.... still so much more to do to make the sector more balanced

Read our joint letter with the Royal Academy of Engineering in today's Financial Times regarding the uptick in18 year-olds applying for UK engineering degrees. But as the letter highlights there is still much to do — less than 16 per cent of UK engineers are women and only 12 per cent are from minority ethnic groups — we need more young people from all backgrounds to help ensure future technology really benefits society and delivers economic growth. https://lnkd.in/eS86XVY5

In reaction to this report our Head of Research Becca Gooch said: "This research paints a worrying picture of girls in STEM. It reflects the gender gap in interest in science identified in our research with The Royal Society, where 36% of girls said science wasn’t for them. Given the underrepresentation of women in engineering and technology (just 15.7% of the workforce) and concerns about current and projected future skills shortages, we can’t afford for more girls to drop out of STEM. "In direct response to the findings of the Science Education Tracker we have built a partnership to drive a collective mission to significantly increase the number of girls in education pathways to engineering and technology at age 18. This new research makes us even more determined to address this issue head on. It's never been more important to show girls there is a place for them in STEM and to support them to reach their potential."
