About us

We urgently need to balance the needs of all people with the needs of our planet to ensure a safe and just future for all. We are draining natural resources, destroying ecosystems, and to avoid further climate crisis, emissions must drop drastically in the next decade. Meanwhile, there continues to be vast inequality across the world, with millions of people still without their basic human rights met. Engineering has played a significant role – both good and bad – in getting humankind and the planet to where we are today. Typically, the engineering community still relies on unsustainable practices and materials, with limited consideration of the broader impact. The building and construction sector alone is responsible for 38% of global emissions. Engineering education and practice used to evolve with the needs of society. Evidence shows that this has stagnated, with a recent survey finding that 93% of UK engineering companies with a sustainability strategy do not have staff with the skills to fulfill it. This has to change. We need to move away from outdated working methods and prioritising profit over people and planet. With a different approach, the engineering community has the power to rapidly transform our world for the better. Since 2001, Engineers Without Borders UK has been inspiring the engineering community to commit to global responsibility. As society moves towards the deadline to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, we will collaborate with companies, universities and a wide variety of organisations to mainstream globally responsible engineering and develop unstoppable momentum towards achieving social and environmental justice through engineering. Whether you are an engineer, academic, university student, or involved with engineering in any way, we want and need you to be a part of this movement for change.

Our Masculinity in Engineering Research survey has been live for the past few months, gathering crucial insights into male identity, workplace culture, and mental health in engineering and technology. Previous research in 2019 and 2022 revealed alarming trends, with the number of respondents who had considered self-harm or suicide rising from 1 in 5 to 1 in 4 in just three years. With suicide being the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK, and male construction workers 3.7 times more likely to take their own lives than the national average, this research is more important than ever. We have already received valuable responses, but we want to hear from as many engineers as possible before the survey closes. If you have not taken part yet, now is the time. bit.ly/MiESurvey24 Take part. Share your story.

  • 🧠💭 “We need to be future-imaginers.” As we gear up for the relaunch of the Systems Change Lab on Thursday 20 March, we’re revisiting this conversation with Oliver Broadbent, Founder and Director of Constructivist , from our first edition of the Lab. The world is changing fast, and engineers must be equipped to navigate complex socio-ecological systems - not just optimise within them. That means rethinking how we train engineers, shifting the focus from efficiency to empathy, from solving problems to seeing new possibilities. 🌎 The first Lab explored the challenges in engineering education. Now, we're bringing our network together to shape the path forward for 2025. Join us to drive real impact. 🔗 Find out more about the Lab and register to attend here:  https://lnkd.in/eVAFyXYY #SystemsChangeLab #FutureOfEngineering #EngineeringEducation #SystemsThinking

  • 💚 💧 👏 We're delighted to see The Washing Machine Project go from strength to strength through this new partnership with JLR!
