Can the protection of cultural property in armed conflict encompass natural sites that are of cultural or spiritual relevance to Indigenous and other groups? Dr Marina Lostal, along with Dr Matthew Gillett, addressed this question in an expert report facilitated by CAPAZ and submitted to the Special Jurisdiction for Peace in Colombia (JEP) this year. The JEP is dealing with the Colombian transitional justice process in accordance with the 2016 peace agreement. Here are some photos of the event held at the JEP on 1 October, hosted by Judge Belkis Izquierdo and moderated by Juliette Vargas (CAPAZ). Our scholars argued that, despite the Eurocentrist and monumentalist origins of this field of law, the concept of cultural property can encompass natural sites under certain (not all) instruments. This could have repercussions in how the JEP decides to investigate, prosecute and repair episodes of damage and destruction of Indigenous territories and the like. Thanks to IUCN WCEL for facilitating Dr Marina Lostal’s travel to Colombia.

🚨NEW: we've published an excellent new paper by Prof Lorna Woods, Essex Law School, which looks at #safetybydesign in the context of the #onlinesafetyact. The Act's introductory section sets out that "the duties imposed on providers by the Act seek to secure" that regulated services are "safe by design". So far, there's been little in the draft codes and guidance from Ofcom to help make that reality. 💡But there's lots to draw on from "by design" approaches and principles in other domains and jurisdictions, including those developed in the UK by the National Cyber Security Centre and the Information Commissioner's Office, in Australia by Julie Inman - Grant, eSafety Commissioner and in Canada by Ann Cavoukian, Ph.D. Global Privacy & Security by Design 🧐 The UK's Department for Culture, Media and Sport even produced its own set of #onlinesafety principles three years ago, when the #OnlineSafetyBill was still inching its way through Parliament, though this work seems to have got somewhat lost in the transition of the policy responsibility to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology ☕️ So, grab a cuppa and take a look. 👇 #privacybydesign #securitybydesign #securebydesign #cybersecurity #dataprotection #GDPR #inclusivebydesign #AIregulation Lord Holmes https://lnkd.in/emN7gJ4F
