One Thousand Years of Wonder
About us
A vibrant community hub and a world-class heritage destination, Exeter Cathedral has been at the heart of Devon for nearly a thousand years. It has witnessed a fascinating history and remains home to a living faith, a place for learning and a retreat for relaxation. Exeter Cathedral is, at once, a centre of innovation and of ancient treasures; telling stories of the past while carefully conserving them for the future. Innovatively sharing its secrets to welcome a new generation.

Did you know that the third Sunday in January each year is World Religion Day? World Religion Day was first established in 1950 as a day for people of all faiths and beliefs to promote understanding and peace, and to celebrate diversity. It is a great day to engage in interfaith conversations and learn more about other people in your local community! Maybe you would like to visit Exeter Cathedral or your local church today to learn more about Christianity? "Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord" - Hebrews 12:14 #ExeterCathedral #YourCathedral #WorldReligionDay

This week the Exeter Cathedral Stonemasons have been creating clay models of Cathedral Archaeologist, John Allan, as part of a portrait modelling course led by renowned sculptor, Adrian Melka. As part of future works at the Cathedral, we hope to showcase a number of carved corbels featuring portraits of people with connections to the Cathedral, to recognise their contributions. The training has been kindly funded by a generous grant from The Radcliffe Trust, the course will help develop the Stonemasons’ portrait skills and build their technical knowledge. #ExeterCathedral #YourCathedral

It’s Heritage Treasures Day! The wonderful collection of misericords is one of Exeter Cathedral’s many Heritage Treasures. Exeter Cathedral holds 47 exquisite 13th century misericords and two from the 14th and 15th centuries – one of the earliest surviving sets in the country. They feature elaborate carvings of scenes of everyday life, nature, mythical beasts and more. Our misericords are in urgent need of conservation. As part of The Exeter Cathedral 2020s Development Appeal, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, we are working to preserve them for future generations so that they can continue to tell the story of Medieval Exeter. #ExeterCathedral #YourCathedral #The2020sDevelopmentAppeal #HeritageTreasures
