About us
Exmoor was first designated as a National Park in 1954. Since then, the co-ordination of work to achieve in the area has been undertaken by local government and since 1997 by a free standing Exmoor National Park Authority. Our two main objectives (National Park purposes) are: - "To conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the National Park" - "To promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the National Park by the public" Around 80 staff work in the 267 square miles of Exmoor National Park Authority, providing a range of services to the (c.11,000) residents and nearly 2 million annual visitors, supported by a highly knowledgeable ‘crew’ of volunteers. Stunning landscapes, dark skies, and tranquility - glimpse wild Red Deer (largest mammal in the UK) or the native Exmoor Pony who roam freely over the moor. A warm rural welcome awaits you in Exmoor National Park.

Don't miss our Exmoor column in this month's Somerset Life!
Not only does November herald the start of the festive season at Somerset Life magazine but it also marks my 1st anniversary of sitting in the editor’s chair. I say 'sitting', but as of the last few weeks I am now writing to you from an upright position as I embrace the new world of the ‘standing desk’. It turns out that editing a magazine involves a lot of time at the laptop and my posture certainly isn’t cut out for such a sedentary role so my back decided to throw me a slipped disc as a warning to get moving again! For fellow sufferers of back pain, you have my complete sympathies- it is excruciating and a stark reminder that we humans really should move more. In fact, my GP and Physiotherapist both uttered the same staunch words ‘Sitting is the new smoking!’ There’s a lot to enjoy this issue. For those of you who are welcoming Christmas early, we have wreath-making courses, festive excursions, homemade bakes and interior decoration tips at the ready. For those who aren’t quite ready to get in the festive spirit fear not – not all of the features are doused in glitter and tinsel! We have true life Somerset stories galore, be they cider-making in Australia, rehoming hens with our favourite Dragon, Deborah Meaden or having a potter around Caroline Quentin’s garden. As well as declaring her love for Exmoor, Caroline also talks candidly about her relationship with nature and how it brings her peace of mind and a sense of constancy in an unpredictable life. ‘We gardeners are optimists. To sow a seed is an act of hope and to plant a tree is to be believe in the future.’ I may not be a gardener as such but embracing nature is most certainly something I champion too and something I will be doing even more so to ensure that I can continue to bring you the very best stories from across the county without a limp and hobble! Did you know our team manage two Exmoor pony herds? Exmoor Ponies aren't just iconic, they're a vital part of the landscape, helping with conservation grazing. Thanks to the work of Exmoor pony enthusiasts around the country, the Exmoor pony breed has gained popularity and there's a growing market for moorland bred youngstock. Moorland farmers, herd owners and Exmoor pony breeders have ensured that important bloodlines have been conserved and new areas populated with Exmoor pony herds #exmoor70

We are really excited to be a part of this and look forward to some great projects, bringing young people closer to nature, happening on #exmoor
Generation Green 2 is a £4.5m project to help young people forge closer connections with nature. The National Landscapes Association is thrilled to be one of the Access Unlimited partners delivering the programme. Eight National Landscapes are involved, hosting magical, fun experiences for young people - from stargazing to wild cooking; campfire tales to night time rambles. By next spring 41,500 young people who would not otherwise have the chance to enjoy natural spaces will have enjoyed taking part in the programme. We'll be sharing stories from the sessions in the coming months.
