Five years of Fathm 🎂 In 2019 when Fergus and I announced the launch of Fathm, we had big plans and big ideas. Our careers had shown us that even though journalism as an industry can feel slow to change and adapt, newsrooms around the world have people and teams who work tirelessly to make transformation happen. We wanted to work with those people - to support them to experiment, to help them learn and iterate, and to work with them to scale ideas that showed impact. For a small business to survive and thrive for its first five years is no mean feat, and our heartfelt thanks go to all our dedicated employees and associates as well as our inspiring partners and clients for joining us on this journey. As we enter our sixth year we’re not afraid to throw ourselves into even bigger challenges, working with hundreds of newsrooms around the world to slowly but surely reposition our industry from being reactive to the technological and societal changes happening around us, to being proactive in our collective pursuit of sustainability and connection with our audiences. One of the reasons we love our work is the rich diversity of challenges we take on, so to mark our fifth birthday we thought we’d give you a whistle stop tour of just a few of the things we’ve worked on over the past half-decade: - working with some of the world’s leading non-profits and UN agencies to design award-winning brands, campaigns and information products that have reached hundreds of millions of people to ensure they have access to science-backed information through a global pandemic. - supporting leading national and local broadcasters to set up award-winning fact checking and disinformation investigation units. - designing and implementing strategies for local newsrooms to capture and communicate audience and community impact. - working with newsrooms of all sizes around the world to design and implement AI strategies that augment newsroom capacity and deepen audience engagement. - piloting new editorial products using innovative and interactive distribution channels. - running leadership development training programmes to help young leaders from independent media to build sustainable news businesses. - delivering video production tooling that helps video teams at top broadcasters and news agencies reach and engage new audiences on social platforms. - designing and refining countless newsroom workflows, whether improving big processes across a whole newsroom, or just working with one small part of an organisation to work a little bit better. Most of the work we do with newsrooms happens behind the scenes. We often don’t post about it on LinkedIn or present it at conferences. The reason for that is simple: it’s how we can best serve our clients and partners. As we look back proudly on our first five years, we also look ahead to the next five years. Journalism matters more than ever, and we’re looking forward to shaping the future of our industry with you all.

This week saw the much anticipated launch of the WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers Newsroom AI Catalyst programme in Europe, where Fathm delivered two days of interactive sessions to kick-start the programme. This in-person gathering brought together media leaders, AI experts, and innovators from Norway, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Luxembourg, Germany, Sweden, France, UK, and Belgium, to explore the future of newsrooms augmented by artificial intelligence. The collaboration, forward-thinking discussions, and hands-on workshops truly showcased the potential AI has for newsrooms—enhancing journalistic workflows, content personalisation, and overall audience engagement. The discussions and workshops offered valuable insights into how AI can be implemented effectively and it was amazing to see key industry players sharing real-world experiences, successes, and lessons learned as they progress on this journey to integrate AI responsibly and strategically. Huge thanks to David Duxin, David Caswell, Stéphanie Barsch, Laura Oliver, Christophe Israël and Martin Froehlich for the insights, wisdom, and energy you brought, and to all the newsrooms participants who got stuck in so enthusiastically! Looking forward to seeing how this initiative evolves! #AI #NewsroomInnovation #MediaTransformation #AIinJournalism
