Does size really matter? (Element size, that is). Our featured blog this week takes a deep dive to explore the trade-off between precision and accuracy in flood modeling. High-resolution models may appear more detailed, but they can be misleading if other factors impacting flood risk are not considered. Read more to understand how focusing on overall model accuracy, rather than just resolution, can lead to more informed risk assessments: https://lnkd.in/e5iRedrF #modelresolution #floodrisk #precisionvsaccuracy #resolution

Machine learning is a powerful technology but it’s not a universal solution. Understanding its potential, limitations and effective applications is crucial. In our upcoming CPD-accredited webinar ‘An introduction to machine learning’, we’ll break down the fundamentals of machine learning – what it is, how it works and the reasons behind its growing popularity. We’ll explore real-world applications in flood and climate modeling and examine emerging trends that are driving innovation and shaping the future of hydrological modeling. Led by Fathom's Principle Machine Learning Engineer, Dr Chris Lucas, alongside Head of Engineering, Gavin Lewis. Register today: https://hubs.ly/Q03d3cW30 This course has been CPD-accredited by CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) and is the first installment in a three-part series exploring the transformative role of machine learning in flood modeling. #machinelearning #AI #floodmodeling #deeplearning

How do cat models help insurers – and their customers – remain resilient to the increasing risk of catastrophic events? Fathom’s Senior Cat Model Developer Conor Lamb explains how, in this just-published Industry Insight for the Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS). Read it to find out how cat models simulate thousands of years of possible disasters and estimate how they might affect insured properties to help insurers understand both the average long-term losses and the potential damage from extreme events. https://lnkd.in/eKg2uvuS #FloodRisk #CatastropheModels #CatModels

In partnership with Association of State Floodplain Managers, Inc. (ASFPM), join our upcoming online course to explore an alternative approach to understanding statewide flood risk, one that is quickly gaining adoption across the US. Flood risk is a growing challenge for floodplain managers, engineers and decision-makers across the US and worldwide. As the impacts of extreme weather events intensify and urbanization expands, the need for accurate, scalable flood modeling has never been greater. In a rapidly evolving landscape where the future of federal policy, support and funding remains uncertain – and the responsibility for disaster mitigation, response and recovery is increasingly shifting to state governments – what options exist? This course has been pre-approved for Continuing Education Credits (CECs) for Certified Floodplain Managers. In case you missed this excellent use of our office pups last month and potentially the best blog photo we've ever used... At Fathom, we love a good metaphor (and our office dogs). Our Chief Scientific Officer, Oliver Wing, firmly believes that poodles can explain just about anything—including stochastic event sets. So, what do cloning poodles have to do with catastrophe models? Meet the pups breaking it all down in our latest article: Poodles in the park 🐩. https://lnkd.in/erXZ9CCW And if you'd prefer a jargon-free chat about how our global flood catastrophe model can help quantify your risk—without the poodles—drop us a message. #floodrisk #catastrophemodels #poodles #stochasticeventsets #floodmodeling

Who bears the brunt of flood risk in Houston? A study, co-authored by Fathom’s Chief Scientific Officer, Dr Oliver Wing and published in the Annals of the American Association of Geographers, reveals stark inequities in flood exposure across Houston. The research finds that: 🔹 Low-income communities and people of color face disproportionately high flood risk 🔹 Current flood maps often underestimate the true extent of flood hazards 🔹 Future climate change will likely worsen these disparities Understanding these inequities is crucial for shaping more effective and just flood risk management strategies. Upcoming webinar: Climate change and flood risk: Transforming the actuarial profession Climate change is reshaping flood risk—how should actuaries respond? For decades, flood risk models have relied on stationarity—the assumption that past patterns predict future risks. But with climate change accelerating, this foundation is no longer reliable. Join Fathom’s Prof Paul Bates CBE FRS and Dr Andrew Smith for an exclusive webinar exploring how actuaries can adapt their approaches to flood risk assessment. Thursday, 10 April 2025 - 16:00 BST | 11:00 ET Key topics will include: - Why traditional flood models struggle in a changing climate - How emerging data and tools can improve risk assessment - A practical toolkit for actuaries navigating new flood risk challenges Actuaries play a crucial role in shaping the future of risk management—don’t miss this chance to stay ahead.
