What is the future of flood risk data? This is the discussion Peter Slater was part of at NAFSMA (National Association of Flood and Stormwater Management Agencies)'s annual meeting earlier this week in Colorado. It was widely acknowledged that public agencies and private companies are making huge strides in flood risk data, but what do they need to think about when determining what data is needed and how to develop it in the US? Thank you to co-panellists David Bascom from FEMA, Ataul Hannan from Harris County Flood Control District and Conn H. Cole, CFM from Forerunner for collaborating and to Brooke Seymour from from Mile High Flood District for facilitating this lively discussion. Curious about what the key takeaways are from this panel? Academic research is an integral part of Fathom’s ethos. By opening our data and methodologies to academic scrutiny, we cement out commitment to our clients to provide market-leading models based on the latest science. We also hope that our research will fuel further studies, leading to future innovations and findings that push flood research forwards. The result of this approach? Research papers authored by Fathomers end up being referenced in other studies. Many other studies. Just look at how many academic citations our experts have collectively garnered!

In January I attended the "Navigating Climate Challenges in Insurance" event hosted by the Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS), during which we discussed some of the challenges faced by the insurance sector around understanding and modelling risk from different hazards under climate change, and how collaborations and knowledge exchange with academic institutions can be increased. The mutual benefits of increasing collaboration and information sharing between and within industry and academia is something Fathom is particularly passionate about, to help push both sectors forward. The discussions and findings from the workshop, along with some suggestions to help improve the usefulness of scientific research for insurance risk applications, have been summarised in a number of reports. If you're interested in these discussions, you can check the reports out here: https://lnkd.in/eXRNee_V 🌡 🌧 🌊 🌀 +💡 🤝 -> 🏙 -> 🌏 -> 💲 #ClimateChange #ClimateRisk #Insurance #RiskManagement
In January, the Royal Meteorological Society, in partnership with Brit Insurance and WTW, held a workshop with experts from across UK academia and industry, to discuss the challenges around the use of weather and climate data, communication of science, and continued cross-sector collaboration. 💡 Findings from the workshop highlighted a need for improved collaboration between academia and insurance to address challenges related to data sharing, communication of uncertainty, and the continued integration of climate change information into risk models. Today, the Society publishes three reports that discuss the use and applicability of weather and climate information for insurance. The reports detail current useable climate data, and improvements that can be made to scientific study, communication, and research practice, to ensure actionable information is provided to business. ➡️Download the reports and access key findings from the event at https://ow.ly/WNVF50TvbHF #WTWResearchNetwork #insurance #reinsurance #weatherdata #climatedata #insurancenews

What can we learn from Helene and Milton? With communities still reeling in the aftermath of the destructive killer hurricanes, we ask whether the public understanding of risk needs to change, what it means for the insurance industry – and how we can be better prepared for the next extreme event. Read our latest blog which examines how integrating local flood data with broader hurricane impact models can enhance understanding and preparation for future flood events. https://lnkd.in/et2ygYUG #ClimateResilience #ClimateAdaption #FloodRisk #HurricaneHelene #HurricaneMilton

What's the best way to fuel Fathom's monthly meeting? With a charity bake sale, of course! Yesterday, Fathomers descended on the office with a tower of Tupperware, all filled with delicious home-baked goodies ready to be sold in the name of our charity of the year Blood Cancer UK. Needless to say the table didn't look as bountiful by the end of the day! Interested in joining a flood modeling firm, where there's also the possibility of earning a (not quite) Hollywood handshake?
