  • Furniture Upcycling Project with HMP Birmingham   FCC Environment, Mary Ann Evans Hospice and HMP Birmingham have joined forces to take unwanted furniture from Judkins Recycling Centre and deliver it to HMP Birmingham for the prisoners to bring the items back to life via minor repairs, getting creative and learning new skills in upcycling it into something new and improved.    11 men are currently in the workshop with plans to increase this to 20 in due course. The first load of upcycled furniture hit the shops on the 12th March. The items can be bought at Mary Ann Evans Home Store which can be found at 1a Weddington Terrace, Nuneaton, CV10 0AG.    Any unwanted furniture can be donated at FCCs Judkins Reuse Shop: Judkins Recycling Centre, Nuneaton, CV10 0HR.    All profits raised from the sales of the upcycled furniture will help Mary Ann Evans hospice provide support for patients and their families living with life limiting or life threatening illnesses in the local area Services - Mary Ann Evans Hospice   The workshop attends to many and varied roles within the Waste Recycling remit. This can be as varied as the baling of cardboard or metals, to the repairing or rejuvenating of other items within the establishment. Examples of which are prisoners’ boots or clothing and items such as furniture or electrics. This enables savings to be made on budgets.   When the Waste Management Recycling workshop was first created, it was with the idea of having a work ethos that would give the staff members and prisoners something to ‘buy in to’. Not just turn up and get through the day. Areas within this ethos are teamwork, responsibility, integrity, initiative and creativity. All of these fit well into employability skills. It is hoped that men will build upon these as they gain knowledge and competence with tools.   Amongst other waste/recycling roles there is the upcycling of unwanted or old furniture. This has become available through the partnership with FCC Environment and Mary Ann Evans Hospice. Selected items of furniture come into the workshop. The men have a look through the items with the staff. Ideas about what could be done to repair or upcycle the furniture are discussed. There is a degree of excitement amongst the prisoners as the select, begin and continue to work upon the furniture.   So far, there have been around forty items of furniture that have been completed. The men in the Workshop stated how they enjoy the work involved. Giving them the opportunity to gain new skills and confidence completing work that they never imagined that they could do. It is fair to say, the quality of pieces that have been finished is very high. The prisoners are proud of their work and like the fact that they are giving back to the community in some way." • STEM careers fair gets ‘forensic’   FCC Environment’s Mar Martinez Casas, Input/Output Operations Manager at our Energy from Waste facility in Allington, recently attended Maplesden Noakes School in Maidstone for a careers fair for year 7 students to inspire and encourage them to think about a career in the STEM sector.   Around 100 students attended the event with local businesses attending to inspire the next generation. One of the activities was a treasure hunt around the local employers engaging with the students and showing them that STEM can be fun too.   Mar particularly enjoyed the activities the Metropolitan Police Forensic team laid on with the other business attendees getting the opportunity to become part of the forensic team for the day and run a Crime Scene Operation for themselves.   Mar stressed that “no one was hurt in the exercise but much fun was had by all.” The team at FCC Environments energy from waste plant in Allington offers public tour bookings to schools, further education establishments and all interested parties. The tour is designed to promote and inform visitors about benefits of using waste to produce renewable energy as well as educating about waste reduction, reuse and recycling.   To find out how you and your group can arrange a visit, please visit https://lnkd.in/eZTp7FM5 The Allington Integrated Waste Management Facility recovers energy from non-recyclable, non-hazardous waste streams and the plant began operating in late December 2008. The facility is able to process up to 550,000 tonnes a year of mixed waste for energy recovery and a further 65,000 tonnes of separated materials suitable for recycling.

Today FCC Environment is celebrating Global Recycling Day! Global Recycling Day was created in 2018 to help recognise and celebrate the importance that recycling plays in preserving our precious resources and securing the future of our planet. It is a day for the world to come together and put the planet first. Working for FCC Environment we already know how significant all of this is. The last decade has been the hottest on record, and we are now facing a climate emergency. If the world doesn’t make significant and rapid changes, we will continue to see rising global temperatures, the melting of icecaps, and ever more wildfires. Recycling is a part of the solution by helping to protect our natural resources. www.globalrecyclingday.com shared that each year recycling saved over 700 million tonnes in CO2 emissions, and this is projected to increase to 1 billion tonnes by 2030. Do you know how much energy is saved by recycling newspapers? According to WRAP, one tonne of recycled newspapers saves about 10.2 million B.T.U.’s of energy, 380 gallons of oil, 26,497 litres of water, and 3 cubic metres of landfill space. How can we all make a difference on Global Recycling Day?   Recycle Are you recycling at home and within your businesses? Recycling helps reduce energy usage, the consumption of fresh raw materials, air/water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Tell others about recycling Teaching others about recycling and its benefits is also important. People tend to listen when you talk about money, and recycling can definitely save you, your neighbour, or your business money. Encourage those who recycle Recycling should be part of our daily lives, and the individuals and businesses who take them seriously deserve praise and recognition. So, why should we all support Global Recycling Day?   Simply put, recycling is one small step that we can all take each day to make a difference and its what we at FCC Environment do every day when we come to work But can we all unite to go one step further and think about reducing and reusing more of what we consume? Reuse saves money. Reusing items such as disposable containers, soap, clothing, bags, and even furniture, could save you or your business money, and you'll need to buy fewer new items as a result. And those things combined contributes to another small step towards saving our planet. So please get involved with Global Recycling Day today, not just at work, but at home too, share your knowledge and help friends, family and your business to do the same!

Tomorrow marks International Women’s Day 2025, a day for the world to come together and celebrate women's achievements in society and in the workplace! According to data from the World Economic Forum, at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158, which is roughly five generations from now, to reach full gender parity. As individuals, we can all take steps in our daily lives to positively impact women's advancement. We can call out stereotypes, challenge discrimination, question bias, celebrate women's success, and so much more. Additionally, sharing our knowledge and encouragement with others is key. The waste and recycling industry may not attract as many females as we would like, yet, but at FCC we are always striving towards a level playing field for anyone who wants to join our sector and make a difference when it comes to environmental best practise. So we wanted to mark the occasion by shining a light on some of our very own ‘Women in Waste’ from around the business by creating this powerful photo montage! #IWD2025
