👏 We were proud to see Jonathan Heneghan and Lee Hodder representing Viridor on Day 2 of the Energy from Waste Conference, delivering powerful insights into the future of Energy from Waste (EfW) and Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS).👍 💡 Jonathan Heneghan shared a valuable perspective on heat offtake projects, emphasising that while heat may be available, it’s not free – considering the capital expenditures for development and operating costs involved. He highlighted the challenges of brownfield modifications, the critical need for strong cooperation between heat producers and off-takers, and the importance of design flexibility to balance complexity and cost. Jonathan also advocated for early support in engineering and planning to make facilities truly "offtake-ready" when heat demand arises. 💡 Lee Hodder delved into the credibility of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) from EfWs, stressing that revenue from CDR credits is essential to building a sustainable business case without heavy government subsidies. He discussed the role of the Emissions Trading Scheme and complementary regulations in driving carbon capture, as well as the need to reduce risk costs to support CCUS deployment. Lee also highlighted the opportunity to bring down build costs through standardisation and replication, with Viridor already developing five CCUS projects at a scale. 🤝 We’re excited to continue leading the way in sustainable innovation and advancing our industry’s role in a low-carbon future! 💚 #EnergyfromWaste #HeatOfftake #CCUS #Viridor #BuildingAWorldWhereNothingGoesToWaste #efw2025

👏 Our very own Tim Rotheray took the stage at the Energy from Waste Conference's Leaders Panel today, sharing Viridor’s vision for the transformative potential of Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) for our sector and beyond. 📢 He highlighted how CCUS represents the biggest infrastructure investment opportunity for Energy from Waste, with the potential to kickstart the negative emissions market, support UK CCUS infrastructure and create vibrant green industrial hubs powered by domestic green energy. ☝️ Tim emphasised the critical role of the Emissions Trading Scheme in driving deep decarbonisation. With neither Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs nor Viridor anticipating a drop in residual waste volumes, our focus is clear: drive down fossil content, maximise Carbon Dioxide Removals and push toward a greener future. 🤝 The establishment of the National Infrastructure Service Transformation Authority and the 10-year infrastructure plan are pivotal steps forward. They’ll help shape where future EfW assets will thrive and guide a smart approach to retiring older infrastructure. 🤝 The energy and collaboration at the conference has been incredible, and we can’t wait to build on this momentum! 💚 👇 For more information on the Viridor's vision please click here 👇: https://lnkd.in/evp97ReC #EnergyFromWaste #CCUS #Decarbonisation #Viridor #BuildingAWorldWhereNothingGoesToWaste #efw2025

👏 Excellent to see our CEO, Kevin Bradshaw, articulate Viridor's commitment to the UK's growth agenda and Net Zero vision whilst opening the Energy from Waste Conference 2025. 🤩 Kevin highlighted the story of Darren Bolton C.Eng FIMechE, the plant manager at our Runcorn facility, who is a living example of our commitment to energy evolution through his journey from a coal-fired power station in Warrington to spearheading the green transition with us. At Viridor, we believe that by embracing carbon capture technology, we can transform the Energy from Waste sector into a generator of clean energy and a significant contributor to the UK's Net Zero goals. This is a £19bn investment opportunity that could create 14,000 green jobs and £40bn in gross value added.👏👏👏 This is truly our moment as a sector. We have the chance to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries and become the UK’s largest source of domestic carbon removals in a cost-effective manner. This is an opportunity worth striving for and sits at the foundation of everything we do at Viridor.💚 #EnergyFromWaste #NetZero #CarbonCapture #Viridor #BuildingAWorldWhereNothingGoesToWaste #efw2025

Earlier this month, Viridor hosted an event that focused on the exciting opportunities that lie ahead for the Energy from Waste (EfW) sector. The event, titled Carbon Capture: A Waste(d) Opportunity, marked the launch of our latest report, detailing how EfW can provide the UK’s only durable, entirely domestically fuelled source of engineered Carbon Dioxide Removals (CDRs). With the UK Government legally bound to achieve net zero by 2050, addressing ‘hard to abate’ emissions is crucial. The Climate Change Committee estimates that at least 45 million tonnes of CDRs per year will be needed to meet net zero targets however we face a challenge of building the infrastructure required to generate sufficient CDRs. Chris Stark CBE, DESNZ, specifically commented during the event that "energy from waste is absolutely critical to that challenge as both an emitter, also a hard to abate technology and a power generator", a sentiment that was echoed by Moira Redmond, DEFRA, and Niall Mac Dowell, Imperial College. ♻️ By 2035, EfW could deliver up to 6 million tonnes of CDRs per year – more than enough to offset the fossil emissions of a clean power grid. ♻️ By 2050, this could rise to over 10 million tonnes per year, accounting for 20% of the Climate Change Committee’s minimum requirements. ♻️ UK EfW with CCS has the potential to balance all emissions from Gatwick, Manchester, Stansted and Luton airports – up to 10.6 million tonnes annually, which is nearly 2.5 times the emissions of the proposed third runway at Heathrow! As the market leader in EfW, we’re proud to be leading this charge. The time to act is now, and together, we can turn this vision into reality. Read our report to learn more about how EfW with CCS can help secure the UK’s net zero future. #Decarbonisation #CarbonCapture #EnergyfromWaste #ClimateAction #NetZero
