Stretcher Fencing... During WWII the UK government created half a million stretchers made from steel tube and wire mesh? As the war progressed, the government removed fences and other metal items from across London in aid of the war effort. When the war ended, the UK was left with a huge number of steel stretchers and missing fences across London, particularly the southern boroughs. The simple solution? Turn the stretchers on their side and fix them to walls/posts and replace those missing fences. If you walk around south London, you can still see these WWII stretcher fences in place (Becket St and Tabard St near Borough tube station, amongst others). We just love it when history, architecture and fascinating stories collide...
