An "incredibly rare" female baby hippopotamus has been born at Edinburgh Zoo. The tiny endangered pygmy hippo calf, named Haggis, arrived on 30 October and zookeepers said her personality was "beginning to shine" already. Pygmy hippos, otherwise known as dwarf hippos, are native to West Africa and experts believe there are only about 2,500 left in the wild worldwide. Find out more via BBC https://lnkd.in/etRUFB9P

#DYK that #OnThisDay in 1923 Jack St Clair Kilby was born, an American electrical engineer who invented the first integrated circuit (IC), for which he shared the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics. His interest in electronics grew out of his in school-age hobby of amateur radio. Year later, working at Texas Instruments, he devised a way to miniaturize a complicated transistor circuit by building its components on a block of silicon with internal connections that eliminated external wiring. On 12 Sep 1958, he demonstrated his first integrated circuit to his supervisor. A few months later, an IC device in an improved form was independently invented elsewhere by Robert Noyce. Geoffrey W.A. Dummer also had the concept years earlier, but not a working device. In Sep 1965, Kilby's team developed the first shirt-pocket electronic calculator using IC's. Glenmorangie Highland single malt Scotch whisky is marking 10 years of its pioneering environmental partnership to restore an extinct oyster reef, by returning its 100,000th oyster to the Dornoch Firth near its home. Since 2014, the Distillery and its partners, Heriot-Watt University and the Marine Conservation Society, have passionately pursued their dream of bringing oysters back to the Firth, in an environmental first. #DYK that today is National STEM/STEAM Day Igniting young minds with the magic of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, shaping innovators of tomorrow's world. Science. Technology. Engineering. Art. Mathematics. These spaces continue to grow at a rapid pace and they are strongly influential in changing the culture of the world. With the acronym STEM or STEAM (Art is a newer addition), these academic disciplines are often grouped together as they have strong similarities in education, policy, workforce and more. And National STEM/STEAM Day is what it’s all about.

Scientists at The University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University have invented a low-cost, flexible pressure sensor that can help prevent blood clots in patients who have had an operation. Ian Hatch, Edinburgh Innovations’ Head of Business Development for the College of Science and Engineering, said: “We’re excited about this technology and looking for clinical partners in the fields of medicine and sport to engage in co-development and/or trials. We also welcome the opportunity to work with supply chain partners to scale up manufacturing and delivery. We see this as an ideal opportunity for investors.” Read more ➡https://lnkd.in/evP_TzWc Philip Hands| Lisa Macintyre| Vasileios Mitrakos| John Gilhooly| Marc Desmulliez| Jason Norman| Scottish Enterprise| UK Research and Innovation| University of Edinburgh School of Engineering| College of Science and Engineering, The University of Edinburgh| Andrea Taylor #deepveinthrombosis #collaboration #innovation
