  • Congratulations to Sir Demis Hassabis and his colleague Dr John Jumper for being awarded The Nobel Prize Prize in Chemistry for their work in Artificial Intelligence.   Their AI model helped crack the code of proteins, the building blocks of life, which is now being used by more than 2 million people from 190 countries and paving the way for the development of drugs to treat diseases.

  • Read Foreign Secretary David Lammy's statement on the anniversary of October 7: Today marks one year on from the deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust. The October 7 attack by Hamas in Israel showed terrorism on a scale and brutality that few countries have ever experienced.   The unthinkable pain of the victims’ families and loved ones endures to this day.    For some the nightmare continues, hostages still cruelly held by Hamas, including one British national, Emily Damari, and three with strong British links. I met family members again with the Prime Minister last week to hear their stories and reiterate our call for all hostages to be released – their bravery in the most difficult of circumstances is truly humbling. We cherish the gift of the victims’ memory and honour their legacy.   Today, we also reflect on the conflict which followed and continues to this day. Again and again in the past year, we have seen the terrible impact this is having on all communities across the region. The unbearable loss of Palestinian civilians, many of them women and children, in Gaza. The humanitarian catastrophe. My thoughts are with all those who have lost so much.    Our goal is Israel and its neighbours living in peace and security, including a viable and sovereign Palestinian state. This may seem distant right now. But the UK will continue to make every diplomatic effort with its international partners to push for an immediate ceasefire to create space for a political solution.

  • Britain is now coal power free.    With the closure of the last coal fired power plant in Britain we have become the first G7 nation to go coal free for our electricity supply.    While the UK is shifting to clean power, the world is not on track to meet our climate goals. Phasing out unabated coal power is the single most important step we can take together to tackle climate change, meet the Paris Agreement goals and deliver the UAE Consensus while providing important health benefits through improved air quality.    The science is clear: coal power remains the largest source of energy related CO2 emissions globally and needs to be phased out first and fastest to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.     The global phase out of coal power is well underway but must be accelerated. To keep 1.5C within reach, phasing out operating coal power by 2040 requires about two coal plant retirements per week.    The urgency to take action has never been clearer. That is why the UK co-chairs the Powering Past Coal Alliance, a global coalition of governments, businesses and organisations dedicated to accelerating a just transition from coal to clean energy.

  • Foreign Secretary David Lammy was in Dublin today to reiterate the UK's commitment to resetting ties with Ireland and Europe. Alongside Minister for the Cabinet Office Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Foreign Secretary met Tánaiste Micheál Martin in Iveagh House to drive forward a modern foreign and development policy partnership. The Foreign Secretary also met Ireland's first female President Mary Robinson, who now serves as Adjunct Professor for Climate Justice at Trinity College Dublin. They spoke about how the UK and Ireland are working together to tackle the climate crisis. Find out more about the visit: https://lnkd.in/eNmb8H-e #UK #Ireland #diplomacy #climate
