🎊 Celebrating one year of Forest IQ 🌳 Today marks one year since the launch of Forest IQ, a powerful data platform designed to help financial institutions tackle one of the planet’s most pressing challenges – #deforestation. The platform includes actionable data on how more than 2,000 companies are addressing their links to this issue. A #COP16 roundtable organised by Institut de la Finance Durable highlighted the vital role #forests play in mitigating #climatechange and supporting #biodiversity, and explored the actionable strategies and best practices the finance sector can use to combat deforestation. “Hundreds of indicators can be quite confusing,” said Executive Director of Global Canopy Niki Mardas, speaking about Forest IQ as part of the roundtable. He explained how Forest IQ helps to make things clearer – partly because it was designed with financial institutions, to identify the core metrics most important to them: exposure, materiality and reported performance. We've developed three high-level core metrics that map transparently to a number of sub-metrics and best-in-class datasets, giving banks and investors both a snapshot and in-depth understanding of the picture – ultimately equipping them to identify high-risk companies and engage with them more effectively. As regulatory pressures grow, financial institutions have a unique opportunity to lead in this space. 🏦 “Banks have the opportunity to #finance the transition rather than the destruction of the world’s forests,” writes Louise Heffernan in Sustainable Views. 🌳 With close to 80% of forest loss linked to agricultural production, financial institutions are uniquely placed to influence companies towards deforestation-free practices. 📢 “Finance is the oxygen of commodities, and the financial institutions that provide capital to commodity companies have the power to change the trajectory of deforestation and conversion rates,” Louise explains. 💡 Forest IQ provides actionable data on how more than 2,400 major companies are addressing their links to #deforestation. It empowers financial institutions to assess risk, engage with high-risk companies and align their portfolios with #climate and #nature goals. 🔎 Learn more about Forest IQ: https://lnkd.in/eu2dx-rg Read the article: https://lnkd.in/em7Dqkaz

🤝 The UK government’s appointment of Lord Alok Sharma KCMG to chair the Transition Finance Council marks a significant step on the UK’s path to a #sustainable, net-zero economy. As President of #COP26 Alok Sharma was a key figure in securing the Glasgow Climate Pact and the Glasgow Leaders Declaration on Forests and Land Use. 🌿 As a global financial centre, the #UK has the power to play a major convening role promoting best practice. Transition finance is essential for accelerating the shift to greener industries and renewable energy. But to meet climate goals, transition finance will have to go beyond just energy, to also support #nature restoration and recovery. 🌳 Its effectiveness also depends on action to phase out financing for activities that worsen the #climate and nature crises, including #deforestation. 💷 Every pound invested today into transition – including nature protection and restoration – is the most cost-effective way to put the future of business and economies on a more secure long-term footing, and to maintain the natural resources and ecosystem services that are the basis for all wealth generation. ⌛ The longer we wait, the more expensive and difficult effective action will become.
