Great to host the Simply Supply Chain decarbonising logistics session at our Doncaster training facility. Insightful discussions on the role of #railfreight in a greener #supplychain, plus we even gave our guests the opportunity to take a ride in our in-cab rail simulator.
Blue skies greeted our #fmcg delegates for today's decarbonising logistics session at Freightliner Group Ltd, Doncaster Academy. With a packed agenda we kicked off with a ‘rail in action’ presentation before heading to the terminal for an exploratory tour and closer look at container types; and a turn on the simulator! Electric freight train will provide up to 85% CO2 reduction compared to diesel road...and as the new signalling system is rolled out, this will increase to 94% - #rail offers real potential for suppliers to collaborate on more efficient freight flows, and trials with Freightliner are already demonstrating ways to shift more road movements onto rail. This afternoon, we are delighted to also welcome Gasrec and Volvo Trucks UK to the 'Road to Net Zero' session, sharing practical insights and learnings on CNG, LNG and BEV. Today is the first event in our 2025 series, designed to fully support members in taking the next step towards net zero. The mood in the room already shows a very clear appetite for action and as Logistics UK President Philip Roe put it: “Don’t let perfect get in the way of good - start now." Meet 'Ted' who will be travelling up and down the country as part of our 60th anniversary celebrations this year! 🧸 Ted is helping us to celebrate by spending time with as many different #Freightliner colleagues as possible - on board trains, in road trucks, visiting engineering sites and even going up cranes! His first adventure was with Frank Mckenzie, a #Freightliner Heavy Haul driver, on service 6Y61 at Hanslope Junction on the West Coast Main Line. It was an engineering train supporting Network Rail's infrastructure maintenance programme. A huge thank you to Frank for looking after Ted and showing him the ropes! #Freightliner60 #TedTravels

Rail freight is essential to driving economic growth, decarbonising supply chains, and supporting regional development. That’s why the Government has set ambitious targets to grow rail freight volumes. Achieving this requires modal shift to rail, meaning that rail freight must remain competitive with other transport options. Research by Steer, published today in Rail Partners' ‘A Greener Track’ report, highlights the need to level the playing field. The report reveals that, over the past decade, rail costs have risen faster than road costs due to factors such as increases in track access charges and the continued fuel duty freeze, making the shift to rail more challenging. We’re urging the Government to continue to work with the rail freight industry to develop a policy framework that levels the playing field, drives modal shift, and unlocks the significant economic and environmental benefits rail freight can deliver. #Freightliner
Rail freight performs a critical economic and environmental function, transporting millions of tonnes of goods and materials around the country every year. Rail freight operators want to invest in the UK and help deliver the government’s missions. But over the last decade, costs for rail freight have risen three times faster than for road haulage, partly due to government policy. Our latest report, A Greener Track: Making rail freight cost effective, based on new analysis from Steer, looks at what’s driving the increase and how the right policy framework can bring more goods on to rail – ultimately delivering more sustainable supply chains. Market conditions have become increasingly challenging for rail freight operators and continue to present a significant barrier to growth and decarbonisation of the transport sector. To secure rail freight growth, government can use the upcoming legislative consultation on rail reform to create a more favourable environment for operators to boost investor confidence and drive modal shift. We had the pleasure of welcoming Sally Jameson MP to our #Freightliner Doncaster Training Academy last week. We talked about what needs to be in place to ensure the forthcoming reform of the railways and the creation of Great British Railways (GBR) acts as a true springboard for rail freight growth - delivering even greater economic and environmental benefits, and helping to realise The Labour Party's missions. We highlighted the importance of ensuring that the legislation to create GBR safeguards and promotes private sector investment - critical to unlocking innovation, efficiency, and delivering long-term growth. No visit to the academy is complete without a go on our Class 66 cab simulator! Sally handled every challenge we threw her way - horses on the track, wandering farmyard animals, and some truly awful weather conditions - with impressive skill. Reflecting on #Freightliner heritage as we turn 60 this year! We'll be taking a look back in time at some of the key landmarks of our 60 years of heritage. To start with, we are going all the way back to 1959... The Condor was an overnight fast freight train service operated by British Railways between London and Glasgow from 1959 until 1965 with all freight carried in containers. The name was derived from 'CONtainers Door-to-Door'. The unorthodox headboard used a maroon for the London Midland Region and a pale blue for the Scottish Region - to honour the journey the train would take through the UK. The Condor was successful and in some ways became a victim of its own success. Richard Beeching's 1963 report 'The Reshaping of British Railways' advocated a shift in almost all freight traffic to move from wagonload traffic to container services. Then in the mid-60s, British Railways emphasis shifted to the new #Freightliner service. Our 60th anniversary also coincides with the celebration of 200 years of the Great British Railway - follow the Railway 200 celebrations alongside our 60th updates throughout 2025. #Freightliner60
