Earlier this week we attended the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee’s stakeholder event. As the trade association for the UK’s main fuel producers and suppliers, which source over 90% of the UK’s transport fuel demand - we pitched to the Committee that we think they should identify and assess Government progress towards addressing barriers to investment, such as carbon leakage, high energy costs, skills shortages, and regulatory/planning constraints. Below are the key points that we raised at the event: ➡ The UK’s oil and gas sector is a critical part of the UK economy, providing energy security to the nation and high-skilled jobs and products that underpin both economic growth and investment in the net zero economy. ➡ The resilience of these and other manufacturing sectors depends, however, on ensuring they remain globally competitive, particularly against countries and regions that are not pursuing the same bold climate goals as the UK. ➡ If the Committee selected our issue to inquire into, it would also be an opportunity for them to look at the Government’s plans for a just transition for the UK’s industrial communities reliant on the fuels industry, as well as ensuring this foundational sector continues to offer stability of supply and deliver innovation across key technologies like renewable fuels, carbon capture, and low-carbon hydrogen. ➡ Energy abundance and openness to all low-carbon energy sources and products are needed to avoid a disorderly transition, which risks consumer upheaval, price volatility, and deindustrialisation. #netzero #energytransition #energysecurity

About us
Fuels Industry UK represents the main refining and downstream marketing companies operating in the UK. Associate memberships are available for other companies in the downstream supply chain, such as LNG, Sustainable Aviation Fuel and distribution companies. Our members and associates play a vital role in the supply of fuel products used in road transport, aviation, marine and heating fuels, for power generation and as feedstocks for the petrochemicals industry. Millions of consumers, along with thousands of businesses, hospitals, schools, the emergency services, maritime and aviation customers depend on these supplies for mobility, power and heating. As the energy landscape in the UK transforms, the refining and downstream sector will continue to adapt and provide innovative solutions to meet the challenges posed by this transformation. Fuels Industry UK is striving to secure the right conditions to support continued investment and a safe, competitive and resilient sector, to support and enable an orderly transition to a growing, low-carbon economy in which the sector thrives. Our member ExxonMobil Fawley shares an update on the important servicing and replacement work taking place at Fawley refinery. Why is this important? Because investment in infrastructure, and in the people and skills required to deliver energy security in the UK is essential and if done correctly will boost our economy. As listed in their post - this project alone requires £100m+ investment and 1400 skilled workers. #InvestingInFawley #MadeInBritain
Ensuring security of supply in energy and chemical products takes investment, and we are delivering one of the biggest here at ExxonMobil Fawley. Bringing together a highly skilled team of staff and contractors, we are servicing, replacing and upgrading key equipment across our 3,250-acre facility, including our Marine Terminal, utilities infrastructure and chemical and production units. At the heart of our integrated capabilities is our Fluid Catalytic Cracker, which is undergoing a full upgrade to keep working the molecule magic that maximises production optionality and efficiency. So, who and what does it take to deliver enhanced operational efficiency and reliability? 💷 £100m+ investment 🧑🔧️ 1,400 skilled workers ⏱️ 500k+ work hours 🤝 40 different contracting companies 🌍 Expertise from four continents 🏗 One of the world’s highest capacity land-based cranes 🥪 A lot of bacon rolls! #InvestingInFawley #MadeInBritain

Read our response to the Technical and operational amendments to the UK Emissions Trading Scheme: data publication, data sharing and Ultra-Small Emitter eligibility criteria for 2026-30 consultation. Our key points from the response are: ⏩ We do not support the proposal to publish the details of all UK ETS transactions made using the Registry. ⏩ Transactions between Registry accounts including internal transfers are commercially sensitive, as they provide an insight into legitimate trading patterns of account holders even if the transaction pricing is not disclosed. ⏩ It's unclear how publication after three years would “aid the functioning of the UK ETS market or help participants in making effective decisions on buying and selling allowances and associated instruments or in planning abatement activities." ⏩ We support the proposal to allow a national authority to disclose UK ETS information to HM Treasury, HM Revenue and Customs and other government departments to facilitate policy development, in particular, development of a UK carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM). ⏩ The UK ETS Authority should not be allowed to disclose confidential installation level UK ETS information to the Climate Change Committee, unspecified third parties or external contractors, as this requires specialist knowledge and expertise to interpret. The government has released their ‘Invest 2035’ industrial strategy green paper and is asking for feedback and submissions. The fuels sector must be included in the industrial strategy given its focus on enabling growth and on the foundational sectors which can support that. Our sector is now and can continue to be a driver of growth for the UK with our products vital for mobility but also right across our everyday lives. We will be submitting our views to the government, detailing how essential it is that our members are covered in this strategy. #Industrialstrategy #Invest2035 https://lnkd.in/ex8ZmH7E

Yesterday afternoon, peers considered the impact of the government's climate policies on jobs, growth and prosperity in a debate introduced by Lord Lilley. Our members can deliver lower carbon fuels and play a critical role in emerging technologies like Carbon Capture and hydrogen, creating jobs and economic growth. But investment decisions for UK projects are competing against those elsewhere. The nature of policies on carbon pricing, lower carbon fuels and regulation are making it hard to attract investment to the UK. For more information on the global challenge we face in our journey to net zero, check out this page on our website: https://lnkd.in/gUiDkv6K #netzero

Read our response to the BSI’s consultation regarding the Publicly Available Specification (PAS) for large hydrogen-fired equipment for use in industrial and commercial settings. Our key points from the response are: ⏩ In our response we highlighted concern that the technical detail within the PAS is confusing and ambiguous. ⏩ The PAS misleads the reader as the title implies that is for large hydrogen-fired equipment for use in industrial and commercial settings, but in reality, it is intended for appliances that are ‘large’ but normally fitted in confined spaces like buildings. ⏩ Such ambiguity within standards, codes of practice and specifications can cause unintended consequences such as regulatory uncertainty. ⏩ To avoid ambiguity, we have requested that BSI clearly and explicitly state the scope of the PAS 4445 standard. Our member Exolum recently handled the pipeline transportation of #SAF that was used in Air and Space Force of Spain flights! This shows the reliability of SAF as a more environmentally conscious aviation fuel. SAF has the potential to reduce emissions considerably compared with conventional jet fuel, depending on feedstock and technology pathway. We must push forward with lower carbon fuel alternatives as a way to bridge the gap between where we are and where we need to be to reach net zero targets. #netzero
We transported SAF for the first test flights of the Air and Space Force! 🚀✈️ Our commitment to sustainability and the use of sustainable fuels has reached a new milestone. Recently, the Air and Space Force of Spain completed flights using #SAF produced in Spain. 💪🏻 Exolum handled the pipeline transportation of this sustainable aviation fuel from the Cartagena refinery to the Alicante facility, where the military's tankers were filled. These successful tests demonstrated the reliability of these fuels and the shared commitment to a more environmentally conscious aviation. 🌱🎖️ #WeAreExolum
