    If you're a data or AI leader looking for your next exciting role You're not alone 👩🏻🧔🏻👩🏾🦱👨🏽🦳👨🏾👩🏼🧕🏾 In the last 6 months, I've spoken to dozens and dozens of data leaders On the hunt for a new opportunity 🚀 From Chief Data Officers to VPs of Innovation From Heads of Machine Learning to Directors of Data This boils down to various factors 📋 👉 Many took on new roles in 2020-2021 during the post-Covid hiring boom and are looking to move on after 3-4 years in role (a natural time to churn) 👉 Some have been made redundant 👉 Others have found it hard to create value from data & AI in their orgs due to tricky market conditions and poor investment, so are eager to move elsewhere The result: A surplus of talented data & AI leaders looking for work 📈 If you count yourself among this group, remember: ▶ In an employers market, it's important to be patient - don't despair if it takes a while to get traction with applications ▶ Your next role is likely to come from someone you know, not from a headhunter or a cold application on Linkedin, so get out there and network ▶ Ask your favourite head hunter or recruiter for tips on how to stand out in this market ▶ Stay open-minded - explore a new sector or consider a lateral move ▶ Don't rule out interim, fractional or advisory work as a stop-gap As the market picks up and re-balances, more opportunities will emerge I'm feeling optimistic going into 2025 and you should too 💫 Are you a data leader looking for work?     Against all the best advice out there I just took a 2-week break from LinkedIn No posting, no commenting, no liking Because 👉🏽 my mental health comes first 👉🏽 balance is everything 👉🏽 notifications re-wire your brain 👉🏽 perspective is clarifying 👉🏽 life success trumps marketing success I wasn’t thinking about audience or reach When I was with my kids at the beach 😎 And it pains me to think I might have been preoccupied Had I not decided to just stop posting for a minute ⏳ I don’t know who needs to hear this but: It is SO VITAL to take breaks from social media Even (especially) if your livelihood depends upon it The world will not end, you biz will not implode Don’t be afraid to turn it off for a sec 📴 I promise you’ll come back feeling refreshed, renewed And ready to dive into what’s next Let’s go 🚀 Higher - AI recruitment

    Hiring lessons I’ve learned from my most successful start-up clients 🙌 Create an intentional culture from day 1 State your values, policies and behaviours from the start and entrench them. They should transcend everything. There is nothing more powerful for candidate attraction and employee retention 🆙 Set a high bar Don’t settle for scrappy and haphazard when what you require is excellence. Think laterally and hire for skill/potential as opposed to pedigree and track record. You can’t build a high-performing team if you don’t set a high bar from the start 📢 Over-explain Don’t assume potential employees know (or care) what you’re building. They need to be sold on why it’s great and why they should get involved. Explain the product, the vision and the roadmap as though they have no prior knowledge. Take them on the journey to truly sell the opportunity. 🕸 Don’t overcomplicate processes Hiring should be methodical but the process shouldn’t be overly complex. Don’t force candidates to jump through unnecessary hoops. As an early-stage start-up, you need to move quickly and be decisive. Aim for a 3-4 stages (MAX) and allow plenty of time for questions so the candidate knows exactly what they are getting into (warts and all)! ✅ Use referrals or a headhunter you trust whenever possible Fast-paced, ambitious start-ups don’t have the bandwidth to rely on job posting, lengthy filtering and screening processes pre-interview. Hiring needs to be swift and decisive (without compromising on quality). Ask peers/fellow-founders you respect for intros to the best people they know, or retain a great headhunter whose standards align with yours.     7 basic but brilliant ways to make hiring more inclusive: 1️⃣ Don’t require a university degree 👨🏽🎓 Not every role requires an academic qualification! Ask for one if it’s non-negotiable for your domain or function, but be open to the idea that the best candidate may be self-trained/taught 2️⃣ Standardise interview questions 🟰 Use a consistent set of job-relevant questions for all candidates to reduce bias and ensure fair comparisons. Avoid freestyling! 3️⃣ Diversify the interview panel 🏳️🌈 Include team members from various backgrounds, cultures and orientations to provide different perspectives and help candidates feel more comfortable 4️⃣ Offer accommodations proactively 🫴🏽 Inform all candidates about available accommodations for disabilities or specific needs before the interview 5️⃣ Use skills-based assessments 🤹🏻 Incorporate practical tests or work samples to evaluate candidates based on their abilities rather than relying solely on traditional interviews. 6️⃣ Beware of the phrase “they seem like a good fit” 🙅🏿 A “good fit” is meaningless and can lead to all kinds of bias unless it’s aligned to specific criteria - eg. the candidate’s answers align with specific company values or predetermined skills required for the role 7️⃣ Implement bias training 🏋🏾 Provide regular training for interviewers on recognizing and mitigating unconscious biases in the hiring process. These may seem obvious but often the most basic measures are overlooked!     Doesn’t it feel incredible To have a superstar in your corner? 💫 Today I’m celebrating the gifts of Julie Kim A brilliant photographer I’ve been privileged to have in my corner 📷 In business and in life For nearly 10 years 🫶🏽 I was introduced to Julie in 2014 when I was searching for a photographer for my wedding The person I was recommended initially by a friend wasn’t available But that photographer referred me onto Julie And this proved a serendipitous turn ✨ Turns out, Julie was a Canadian transplant living in London (like me!) 🇨🇦 Was available on the date of our wedding And her playful, documentary-style approach to photography was exactly what we’d been looking for We instantly hit it off and have been in touch ever since💥 My relationship with Julie has blossomed as both hers and my businesses have expanded Since our wedding in 2015, Julie has captured beautiful moments with our growing family 👨👩👧👦 And has played a key role in the marketing of my business (& Tom Foster's 🚀) Photoshoots with Julie have marked key milestones in my journey 🗺️ Both professionally and personally When we reunited a few weeks ago, with the stunning offices at Venture X White City as the backdrop for our latest shoot I was struck by how much Julie has done for our family and businesses And felt overwhelming gratitude 🫶🏽 So here's to you, Julie!
