Those of you who email me will see a new email signature strip below my name. Germinal and its parent company Openfolde are celebrating their 200th anniversary in 2025. Not only is that an incredible achievement, but what makes it even more special, is that the company has been owned and run by the same family for the whole of that time. It is currently being run by the 6th Generation of the family and I am somewhat surprised to note that I have worked for half of those Generations, Mr. Stephen Gilbert, John Gilbert and William Gilbert. I would like to congratulate them, their forebears and all the previous managers in the group, for 200 years of successful business.

“I feel clover is the way forward on this farm because we’re getting better animal performance, and equal yields on our silage ground with no applications of nitrogen," explains livestock farmer Jimmy Madigan. “Plus, we’re able to produce a high-protein crop that reduces the need for expensive imported protein.” Support sustainable food production. #foodindustry #sustainableagriculture #climatesmart

“If soil pH isn’t right, everything else is under pressure.” Soil fertility is fundamental to grass and forage production for award-winning Wexford dairy farmer Michael Doran. Aiming for 80% of the farm to have optimum soil fertility, Michael can produce 15.5t of grass in a good year and with sustainable practices. Plenty happening for Openfolde in New Zealand this week, with Ben Wixey on an Agritech tour on behalf of Germinal and William Gilbert meeting colleagues from Germinal NZ and Cates, New Zealand's Seed Specialists. A few pics of our Germinal Horizon Broadfield site where the next generation of Germinal grass and clover varieties are being developed and tested.
