Asda kicked off the school year with a our first ever Girls in Data event in Sheffield! Todays session was hosted at King Edwards V11, where the head of IT and Engineering delivered an inspiring opening speech. The students were nothing short of exceptional. Their engagement, attentiveness, and enthusiasm for diving into the world of data was truly impressive. Some highlights of the day included watching the students create amazing dashboards in a short amount of time, showcasing both their creativity and analytical sides. Additionally, we explored the evolution of AI, starting with a fun session on Akinator, where it eventually guessed 'bread,' after some amusing questions and then ending the excercise with students using Copilot where they generated a penguin doing the Macarena while eating macaroni... A fun demonstration of generative AI in action! It was an inspiring Girls in Data session, filled with talented young minds who clearly have bright futures ahead. Here's to breaking new ground for Women in Data® and girls in data! Thank you my amazing team couldn't do this without you. This week, we welcomed our first work experience student off the back of the Girls in Data Women in Data® initiative.   The student spent three days at Asda House in Leeds, diving into the world of Business Intelligence, and her performance was nothing short of amazing. 🌟   She was inquisitive, eager to learn, and a pleasure to work alongside. By the end of her time with us, she expressed how Asda exceeded her expectations, stating. 🙌   This experience underscores the importance of initiatives like Girls in Data, which provides young women with positive role models and opportunities to explore careers in data through hands-on experience. We are excited to continue supporting such valuable initiatives! 💡   During her time with us, She learned all about Asda and our Data Visualisation team, gaining insights into my role in Pharmacy and Optical. She also used Power BI for the first time, creating her first Dashboard. She shadowed the Legal and Compliance BI team, gaining valuable insight and completed a research-based task for the Omnichannel Customer Support (OCS) BI Team, analysing articles and customer feedback. We also discussed our people and engagement plans, explored ways to make the Girls in Data curriculum more engaging. It was a packed three days, but incredibly rewarding. We look forward to and welcome more opportunities like this in the future! Thank you Mark Stevens and Rebecca Tomlinson for your help and support!   #GirlsInData #WorkExperience #ASDA #BusinessIntelligence #WomenInData #STEM #Empowerment #ThatsMoreLikeIt

Yet another Girls in Data event delivered last week representing Asda, this time at Temple Moor High School in Leeds. The enthusiasm and confidence of the girls was fantastic as they embraced all things data, learning about encoding with ciphers, developing AI products, and delving into Power BI. When asked at the end of the day if the session had made any of them consider a role in data or tech, it was amazing to see all the girls’ hands fly up in the air! 🙌🚀 with Gabriela Dobre Sophie Pinder Asda #inspiringminds Girls in Data Women in Data®

🚀 Breaking barriers and inspiring minds! 🌟 Today, I had the privilege of leading a Girls in Data session at Ruth Gorse academy alongside six exceptional volunteers as part of the #GirlsInData initiative. Together, we inspired 18 young girls to pursue careers in data, helping bridge the gender gap in the field. This session diverged from our usual curriculum, tailored specifically to the school's request to delve deeper into our careers and roles within Asda. Despite having only half a day available, we crafted an engaging program that included insights from various professionals, such as a Project Coordinator, Data and Transformation Manager, Senior BI Manager, Business Intelligence Analysts, and even an apprentice, showcasing alternative paths into the data realm beyond traditional university routes. The interactive nature of the session sparked numerous questions from the girls, resulting in an enriching experience for all involved and a significant win for Girls in Data Women in Data®. We wrapped up the day with a team-building exercise from the original curriculum, providing a cohesive conclusion to the event. Witnessing the enthusiasm of the girls as they gained valuable insights into data careers was truly rewarding. Leading this initiative for Girls in Data Women in Data® through Asda allows us to adapt and tailor our programs to benefit both the girls and the schools, leveraging our knowledge and expertise to inspire the next generation of data leaders. Here's to continued inspiration and empowerment for the young minds shaping the future of data leadership. 💼👩💻 Thank you to the Amazing volunteers who helped out today.
