Research, innovation, and advocacy for the scale-up of evidence-based, playful parenting programmes in the Global South
About us
The Global Parenting Initiative (GPI) is a five-year research-within-implementation project aiming to provide access to free, evidence-based, playful parenting support to promote child learning and prevent violence at scale in the Global South. The Global Parenting Initiative has 6 core themes: 1. Evaluate: Research-within-implementation studies to increase the evidence of the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and scalability of human-digital playful parenting programmes 2. Innovate: Build a cohesive ecosystem of agile, adaptable, and scalable evidence-based human-digital parenting interventions, by developing and optimising playful parenting technologies 3. Facilitate: Create centres of excellence in playful parenting in the Global South, and shifting expertise, leadership, and power from the Global North to South 4. Advocate: Create an enabling environment for regional and country-level policymaking to support the sustained institutionalisation of playful parenting programmes 5. Generate: Build a sustainable infrastructure to support scale-up and capacity building of human-digital playful parenting programmes 6. Accelerate: Support the scale-up of low-cost, open-source playful parenting programmes embedded into national government and NGO service delivery systems Our core partners include the University of Oxford, the University of Cape Town, Makerere University, Ateneo de Manila University, McMaster University, the National Institute for Medical Research Tanzania, Stellenbosch University, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Peace Culture Foundation, IDEMS, Clowns Without Borders South Africa, and Parenting for Lifelong Health. The GPI also works closely with UNICEF, the WHO, the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children, and Early Childhood Development Action Network. The GPI is funded by the LEGO Foundation, Oak Foundation, The Human Safety Net, the World Childhood Foundation, the UKRI Global Challenges Research Fund, and UNICEF. GPI@spi.ox.ac.uk

🚀Exciting innovation update We’re thrilled to share our latest updates on ParentText, including new features and user experiences that positively impact parenting. What's new? 🌟Incentives component: Earn airtime rewards for completing research surveys. 📱ParentText for 5-Day RCT: @Parenting for Lifelong Health (PLH) rolled out the ParentText 5-Day UX as part of a randomised control trial in South Africa to assess the effectiveness of digital-only parenting support. Adapted from the original UNICEF curriculum, it introduces five essential parenting practices, encouraging a daily one-on-one time commitment with your child. 👪ParentText user experience: After the baseline survey, participants are randomly assigned to one of three experiences: WASHText, ParentText, or ParentText with a child development booster. The process ensures a balanced representation of parent and child genders, as well as age groups (2-10 and 11-17). 🤲Inclusive approach: Not joining the study? No worries! You can still enjoy the ParentText 5-day experience. 💧WASHText: WASHText is a brand-new package offering tips on healthy homes, safe food, and clean water. It serves as a control experience for the RCT, providing practical content over five days. In a recent article on Daily Maverick, GPI’s Prof Mark Tomlinson from the Institute for Life Course Health Research at Stellenbosch University outlines the growing threats facing children today, from poverty and inequality to the effects of climate change. Despite decades of research and clear guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, young children’s development is still under severe threat. Tomlinson emphasises that we have the knowledge and evidence to reverse this trend, but what’s needed now is brave leadership. By putting young children at the center of policy-making, we can use this moment to drive radical changes and secure a better future. 🔗 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dhADHa_d #EarlyChildhoodDevelopment #ChildDevelopmentCrisis #InvestInChildren #ClimateAndChildren

In a recent Society & impact luncheon at McMaster University, Dr Amanda Sim presented her research on promoting positive parenting in displaced communities with the help of film. Partnering with the Global Parenting Initiative (GPI), Amanda’s work focuses on preventing family violence and improving mental health in refugee and marginalised populations. Through Being Family, a powerful film co-created with displaced families on the Thailand-Myanmar border, Amanda and her team have reached over 2,000 caregivers. The film is part of GPI’s mission to scale evidence-based parenting programs in low-resource settings. 🔗Learn more about this initiative here: https://lnkd.in/dYhcieif #PositiveParenting #EndViolence #SocialImpact #BeingFamily
