In view of the urgent humanitarian health crisis in #Ukraine, our The Global Vector Hub team together with Arctech Innovation have created a situation report on #vectorborne disease risks in Ukraine and surrounding countries. Key points: There is a risk of nuisance biting by #ticks and #mosquitoes in the coming months; There is a moderate risk of #Lyme borreliosis (LB) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE); There is a very small risk of West Nile virus (WNV); There is a negligible risk of other vector-borne diseases (VBDs), such as malaria or Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF). Overall, the risk of VBDs is considered low; specific risk profiles depend on environmental conditions and living conditions of affected people. Avoid insect and tick bites. Specific guidance on preventative measures against tick and insect bites is given in the report. 📢 Rapid surge of Chikungunya cases in La Réunion. At a startling rate, the Chikungunya outbreak in La Réunion is spreading ⚠️. 695 new cases have been documented in just one week, representing an 85% increase. With an important rise in cases in the island's west and south, the virus has already infected 22 of the 24 municipalities in 2025. These findings are detailed in the latest epidemiological bulletin published recently by Santé publique France. You can check it down below👇 for more information. To help curb the spread, it is essential to take preventive measures : ✔️ Eliminate or cover standing water sources, ✔️ Use repellents and wear protective clothing (if possible), ✔️ Install mosquitos nets (if possible), and help protecting vulnerable individuals. 🦟 To date, the health impact remains relatively low with no signs of severity in 2025. Thus, the rapid spread of the outbreak calls for heightened awareness. Stay vigilant🚨 #Chikungunya #PublicHealth #Prevention #LaReunion

We are looking for a MSc student to perform his/her MSc. thesis (or "afstudeerstage") with us. When? As soon as possible! Where? At the Wageningen University & Research! 💡 Chagas disease is a devastating infectious disease for both humans and animals caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted by triatomine bugs. 🪲 Chagas causes a high economic and disease burden, including deaths. Even though case numbers have dramatically reduced in Brazil, occasional Chagas outbreaks still occur. 🌳 Ecosystem changes, including deforestation and land-use dynamics, as well as socio-economic determinants such as housing quality and poverty, may lead to a shift in the transmission cycle and a greater role for other sources of infection (e.g., increased oral [foodborne] T. cruzi transmission). 🏆 Understanding current human-vector-environment complexities in disease dynamics is imperative to evaluate the status-quo of the elimination targets as set by the World Health Organisation in Brazil. In this thesis, you will perform a systematic review to understand the socio-economic factors involved in pathogen transmission of Chagas in Brazil. You will develop recommendations based on the expertise of scholars in order to contribute to improved control and elimination of T. cruzi transmission in Brazil. 📝 Requirements: Strong (scientific) writing skills or willingness to learn, interest in epidemiology and socio-economic risk factors, experience with systematic reviews is an asset, R programming (meta-regression/forest plots/visualisations), willingness to publish in peer-reviewed journal. Interested? Email your CV and motivation letter to natalie.vinkelesmelchers@wur.nl Helen Esser, Ph.D., Health & Society, Wageningen University & Research

🚨 New Challenges in Mosquito-Borne Disease Control in Portugal! 🚨 I recently wrote a piece for GIMM discussing the challenges posed by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes in Portugal. These invasive species are expanding their range, increasing the risk of diseases like dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Key takeaways from the article: 🦟 Aedes aegypti is currently confined to Madeira, where it caused a dengue outbreak in 2012. 🦟 Aedes albopictus has been spreading across mainland Portugal, recently reaching Lisbon. 🔬 Tackling this issue requires a multi-pronged approach, including enhanced surveillance and innovative control strategies (e.g., Wolbachia). 📢 Check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dBiZCZuX Let’s collaborate to strengthen vector surveillance and mosquito control in Portugal! 🚀GIMM #VectorBiology #PublicHealth #MosquitoControl #AedesAegypti #AedesAlbopictus #Arboviruses #Portugal
