We're working for a wilder Gloucestershire - more wildlife, more wild places and more of us living a wilder life.
About us
Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust was founded in 1961 by a group of volunteers, led by Sir Peter Scott, who recognised that local wildlife was under threat. Since that first meeting, over 50 years ago, the Trust has grown and now has over 500 active volunteers and over 27,000 members. Through the generosity of local support, the Trust is able to protect habitats and species both on its 60 nature reserves and throughout Gloucestershire. We work towards educating, inspiring and connecting more people with nature by running over 100 wild events each year and educating over 3,000 school age children, as well as the 7,053 junior Wildlife Watch members. We are part of a powerful conservation network of 47 Wildlife Trust's across the United Kingdom, which jointly have over 800,000 members, and work together to ensure tat policies and decisions reflect the important of our natural heritage.

A new nature reserve, in the heart of the Stroud Valleys. Connecting the Golden Valley and Stroud Commons Nature Recovery Zones (NRZ) Knapp Lane Meadows is an undulating site stretching to 13.8 ha, a wildflower meadow with mosaics of scrub, woodland and wetland, where the site flows gently to meet the southern bank of the River Frome. Knapp Meadows is just 500m from Blackness Banks nature reserve and around 4km from the centre of Stroud. Donate today and become a Meadow Maker! 🔗 https://ow.ly/hCjv50VpB6x

A throwback video from last year: Look at the beautiful wild native daffodils with our staff member, Alex, at Gwen and Vera's Fields! 🌼 In the 'Golden Triangle,' one of the last meadows featuring these vibrant blooms. Spring brings a carpet of daffodils, attracting birds to orchard trees and woodland. Once a common sight, now a rare gem. 🌿 #Daffodils https://lnkd.in/e5hW8ZAP

On Friday night, a wildfire burnt areas of Juniper Hill Fields and the neighbouring Juniper Hill SSSI. It is really disappointing to see this damage caused to these important sites for wildlife. With spring just starting, birds beginning to sing, reptiles and mammals emerging from hibernation this is a critical time for wildlife. We thank the efforts of the fire brigade and local residents who helped control the blaze. We are still awaiting information as to how the fire started. It is a timely reminder of how easily sites can be damaged by careless disposal of items such as disposable bbqs and cigarette butts. #JuniperHill

Have you spotted any blossom in hedgerows, gardens, and on roadsides yet? The blossom we have been enjoying for the last week or so is not blackthorn, hawthorn, or cherry, but cherry plum (Prunus cerasifera) 🍒🌳. Also known as myrobalan, it's a thornless straggling small tree which is the earliest hedgerow blossom, flowering late January to March. Cherry plum is a southern Mediterranean species, widely naturalised in the UK, and it is often mistaken for the native blackthorn, which flowers after the cherry plum has finished🌸.

🎉 Exciting News! The Western Forest is the first new national forest! Partners from across the West of England, Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire have come together to create a forest network for people and wildlife at a truly landscape scale. 🌿 By 2050, the Western Forest will establish 2,500 hectares of new tree habitats, connecting people to our region’s trees and linking fragmented woodlands. We can’t wait to get started! 🦋🌳 #WesternForest #NewNationalForest #InternationalDayofForests Western Forest UK
