Today (Tuesday 17th September) marks World Patient Safety Day 2024. At the GMDN AGENCY (Global Medical Device Nomenclature Agency) we are proud to support patient safety. In fact it is our mission to be the global leader in naming, describing and unambiguously identifying medical devices for the protection of patients. Our CEO, Deniz Bruce, is currently attending the 26th session of the International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF) in Seattle. Today we have published a guest blog by the National Wound Care Strategy Programme (NWCSP) that explains how they have been using GMDN Codes, Terms and Definitions to align groups of wound management products, leading to higher standards of care and safety. Dr Barry Daniels, Senior Clinical Lead at the GMDN AGENCY (Global Medical Device Nomenclature Agency), has been leading the GMDN implementation on the NWCSP. He said: “Our involvement with the NWCSP is very important as it is one of the first clinically orientated implementations of the categorisation functionality in the Global Medical Device Nomenclature, applied to data captured from multiple sources including Regulatory and Health Service. The GMDN is seen as an internationally-accepted standard that can be used as a basis for a more granular clinically-relevant level of classification. The ongoing collaboration is providing very useful feedback into the GMDN Term development process to improve the utility and effectiveness of the Global Medical Device Nomenclature.” You can read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/e5FxJfT6

Chair of the GMDN AGENCY (Global Medical Device Nomenclature Agency) Board of Trustees John Wilkinson is presenting today alongside several project partners including King's College London, GS1 UK, UCL,Radar Healthcare, PANORAMIC DIGITAL HEALTH and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. The session today is part of a six-month discovery phase funding award from Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, to research improvements in capturing post-market medical device intelligence to improve patient safety within the UK. A group of colleagues from the GMDN AGENCY (Global Medical Device Nomenclature Agency) recently spent a day volunteering at the Oxfam Superstore in Oxford. They helped the online shop and were tasked with photographing, pricing, describing and uploading items online that would be sold to support the vital work of Oxfam.
