📅 Save the date: On Monday 7 October, 12pm-1pm ET/5pm-6pm BST, Harvard Kennedy School will be hosting GPG Founder Greg Power OBE for a talk about his experience helping politicians and officials in more than sixty countries find solutions to today’s problems while building the resilience of their institutions. Combining insights from behavioural economics, change management, and comparative politics, Greg argues for a different approach to political reform, one concerned less with institutional design, and more with the existing logic of human behaviour. The tragedy of turnover. Greg Power of Global Partners Governance muses on the challenges of high electoral churn on today's From Poverty to Power https://lnkd.in/eWCuEkwJ 'In July the UK witnessed its highest ever rate of electoral turnover, with 335 MPs – or 51% – elected to the House of Commons for the first time. This is exceptionally high by UK standards, which usually has a rate of around 20%. But many parliaments routinely lose at least half their members at every election, and in countries like Iraq, Malawi, and Kenya it is often over 70%. It is difficult to overstate the connection between the rate of churn at each election and a country’s long-term political stability. The conundrum for campaigners is, partly, how to navigate such continually shifting terrain and still promote lasting policy solutions. But it is also about whether anything can be done to mitigate the causes of electoral turbulence.' Thinking and Working Politically Community of Practice Alina Rocha Menocal

Vulnerabilities to trafficking have been severely exacerbated in Sudan, amid an increase in the number of risk factors and the significantly reduced capacity of service providers both within and outside the country to meet the needs of victims. A new report by Global Partners Governance examining the impact of conflict on modern slavery and human trafficking in the country has found that the displacement of 8.4 million people, internally and in neighboring countries, has led to increased rates of violence and a lack of safe shelter, heightening the risk of sexual exploitation, forced marriage, child marriage, kidnapping, forced conscription and forced labour. While Sudan has long faced key challenges in its anti-trafficking efforts, such as funding and capacity gaps and a lack of incentives at various levels of government, the conflict has resulted in the complete breakdown of state institutions, including those responsible for upholding law and order. Moreover, most international non-governmental organizations have now shifted to working remotely, while a number of Sudan-based non-governmental organizations providing broader services have had to rethink their programs, leaving youth-led initiatives and volunteer groups to meet the basic needs of local populations. Read more, including Global Partners Governance’s recommendations for service providers, donors and international actors, in this week’s newsletter.
