It can be tempting to think, as you watch the rain lashing the windowpane and the family’s pet rabbit doing the backstroke up and down in his hutch, that at least you won’t have to water the garden. But this isn’t the case. Even in a wet summer your garden still needs watering – rainfall will water the soil’s surface but not deeper down. This was a topic of discussion during our recent visit to Garden Organic’s demonstration gardens in Coventry when a gardener told us that some beds were still very dry despite all the rain we’ve been having. This point is made by Nancy Birtwhistle in The Green Gardening Handbook: ‘Even though there may have been a heavy downpour of rain, which is hugely helpful and beneficial to veggies growing in beds, it is still important to head over to your supply of rainwater (from the biggest water butt you have room for) to water pots, containers and hanging baskets daily, even twice daily on very hot or very windy days.’ Never is a water butt more appreciated than in the fickle British summer. This is a really intersting article published by BBC Future that absolutely shows that #foodwaste is a truly global problem, highlighting a problem that Japan has with excess sushi within its convenience store and shows that in every country we need to be playing our own part in its' reduction. The article states.... In 2020, the Japan Fair Trade Commission estimated that Japan's major convenience store chains throw away on average 4.68m yen ($30,000; £24,000) of food per shop per year – equating to an approximate annual loss of more than 260bn yen (1.7bn; £1.3bn) in total. Japan imports 63% of its food from abroad. In addition to the wasted money and resources food loss represents, it also contributes to climate change through emissions from production, transport and disposal (in Japan, rubbish is primarily incinerated). If you'd like to read the article in its entirety we've included the link to it below: https://lnkd.in/e52Kdt8s

At Great Green Systems we’re proud to be U.K. manufacturers for both the Green Cone and Green Johanna. 🌎 The other part of the equation that’s really important to us too is that both products are made from 100% post consumer recycled material. Both products also have an extremely long life span but if you do ever need a spare part, they’re readily available on our website so you’d never need to fully replace an item if a small part did get broken. That’s the beauty of our modular build system. We’re always here to answer any questions too so if there’s a question you can’t find the answer to on our website, just send us a message. #madeintheuk #madeinbritain #ukmanufacturing

To join in the activities happening during National Children’s Gardening Week (May 25 – June 2) we have three copies of No-Dig Children’s Gardening Book, by Charles Dowding, to give away to budding young gardeners. Dowding shows how gardeners can work with nature using compost and mulch to create healthy soil, copying nature’s way of feeding plants through the soil. Arenowned horticulturalist, Dowding subscribes to the philosophy that if you work with nature, she doesn’t fight back with weeds. The no-dig method involves creating beds by covering weeds with cardboard, spreading compost on top, walking on top of the compost (a child-friendly activity if ever there was one) to create a bed that is ready to plant into. His children’s book includes the following topics: • How to make compost • Upcycling in the garden • Attracting wildlife • How to be a garden scientist • Easy-grow flowers and vegetables Dowding says the no-dig method is simple and quick and will inspire children to make beds any month of the year. They can then watch their plants grow, see how good they taste, and feel their knowledge and happiness growing at the same time. To enter simply click the link below for a chance to be a winner! 🤞 https://lnkd.in/e9piV9R8 (Full Ts&Cs can be found on our social media posts).
