About us
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. It aspires to offer outcomes for children in the top five in the world. The largest centre in the UK for children with heart or brain problems, and, with UCLH it is the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer. It is the only specialist Biomedical Research Centre for paediatrics, it works in partnership with the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), part of University College London, and together they form the largest paediatric research and teaching centre in the UK, and one of the largest in the world. The hospital at Great Ormond Street is the only exclusively specialist children's hospital in the UK. It does not have an Accident and Emergency department and largely only accepts specialist referrals from other hospitals and community services. The population of children served by the hospital is characterised by those with multiple disabilities and/or health problems and rare and congenital (present at birth) conditions.

Last week we hosted our first national Gene Therapy in Paediatrics event. 💡 We were joined by over 60 clinicians from across the UK who were interested to learn more about gene therapy and how it applies to paediatric care. It was a brilliant day of talks and lively panel discussions which covered gene therapy technologies and the latest advancements in gene therapy. 🧬 We also heard from patients who have experienced gene therapy and their families. "I feel like I've been hiding under a rock. Despite requesting and seeing the results of genetic testing, I had no idea of the extent to which gene therapy was being applied, both here and globally. Thank you for this day." - Feedback from attendee We want to thank everyone who attended the day and provided their valuable feedback which will help us shape future events. The event was supported by NIHR GOSH BRC, Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, Muscular Dystrophy UK, Orchard Therapeutics and the Batten Disease Family Association. 🤝 NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) #GeneTherapyinPaediatrics2025 #GeneTherapy #Research

Supporting the mental health of young people with chronic conditions 🧠 Children with rheumatological conditions, such as Juvenile Arthritis, often face significant mental health challenges. While psychologists provide vital support, the shortage of trained professionals across the UK means access is limited. The IMPACT Study, led by Dr. Polly Livermore, NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) ACAF Nursing Fellow and a team of researchers, have developed ‘Rheumbot’ a chatbot app to help families navigate these challenges. Co-designed with young people, the app offers instant, at-home mental health and well-being support, bridging the gap between hospital visits and everyday life. By providing families with accessible guidance, the aim is to ensure that mental health support is available whenever they need it, not just during hospital appointments. The IMPACT study’s Rheumbot is now live for testing and one parent said “I had a little play on the chatbot, what I have seen so far is absolutely brilliant. So much information, it’s going to be a great tool for struggling families!” We have so far recruited 300 children, young people, parents and health care professionals UK wide, but are looking for more parents and young people to take part in this important research, including siblings of those affected with paediatric rheumatological conditions. Exciting news alert! 📰 We have signed the contract for the main works for the Children’s Cancer Centre with our construction partner Sisk. We are full steam ahead with deconstruction of our old frontage building about to start. We are replacing this outdated building with our fantastic new Children’s Cancer Centre meaning our facilities will match our ambitions in cancer care and research. Alongside the amazing new cancer wards and daycare spaces, the new development also means we can: ⛏️ Create a new main entrance for the whole hospital 🔧 Provide extra space for our critical care, imaging and theatres services, all of which are essential for cancer care and treatment, but will also support all specialties across GOSH. 🛠️ Have a new bigger location for the hospital school We are thrilled to have made this significant step forward in achieving our ambitions of our new centre and we are grateful to Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity and everyone who has supported the Build It Beat It appeal which is making this development possible.

Happy #InternationalLEGODay! Check out these amazing models on display in our Clinical Research Facility. They were made by our patients and families at the launch of the facility last year in its new home on the 8th floor of the Southwood Building. Astronaut Tim Peake joined us for the launch where he met with patients, families, staff and children from the GOSH nursery. 👩🚀 We were also joined by Steve McCarthy, the artist who designed the space themed artwork for the facility, in collaboration with patients and families. Tim and Steve ran Lego and colouring in sessions for our patients and families in the play area. The designs made on the day now form part of a permanent display in the facility. #Research #InternationalLEGODay #NationalLegoDay #LEGO
