Unlock the power of collaborative research by partnering with Heriot-Watt University. Through innovative projects like the Whales & Arctic Vessels (WAVE) initiative, businesses like HX Hurtigruten Expeditions are creating real-world solutions to pressing environmental challenges. This 5-year partnership, supported by cutting-edge science, aims to understand and mitigate the impact of vessel traffic on vulnerable Arctic whale populations. Together, we’re not only advancing marine conservation but also paving the way for responsible tourism and ecosystem stewardship. By collaborating with Heriot-Watt, your organisation can contribute to a sustainable future with purpose-driven, data-backed insights. If you're interested in collaborating with Heriot-Watt’s dynamic research ecosystem, GRID (Global Research, Innovation, and Discovery), reach out to explore how our academic expertise can drive innovative solutions at grid@hw.ac.uk. #SustainableHWU #MarineBiology #MarineScience
Pioneering research to protect and conserve Arctic whale populations is to begin under a new collaboration between Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland and HX Hurtigruten Expeditions, a world leader in travel exploration. The partners have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), beginning in 2024, to research challenges facing marine life in the high Arctic – the most northern part of the Arctic region and one of the world’s most fragile ecosystems. The agreement will see Heriot-Watt University and HX work together on the Whales & Arctic Vessels Project (WAVE), a collaboration driven by the urgent need to better understand how often and where whales are encountering vessels in the high Arctic, and how whales are responding to these interactions – an area of research that remains largely unexplored. “We have very little understanding about how frequently Arctic whales are encountering vessels in the high Arctic and how they may be impacted by these interactions,” explained project lead Dr Lauren McWhinnie, an Assistant Professor at Heriot-Watt’s School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society. Last week, we wrapped up Workshop 5: MVP/Prototype Development, a key session in our Global Innovation Challenge series! Participants had the opportunity to dive deep into the essentials of building and testing a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with guidance from Ryan Fenton PhD, Managing Director of i4 Product Design, and Raminta Kazlauskaiteė, Project Manager at Firefinch Software. Ryan led an insightful session on creating MVPs that resonate with market needs, while Raminta provided a unique perspective on navigating the complexities of prototype development from a software lens. Their expertise helped students to frame their ideas in actionable ways, bridging the gap between concept and reality. We're thrilled to see our participants progressing through the challenge, building tangible skills and preparing to pitch their concepts. Up next, we're excited for Workshop 6: Effective Storytelling & Branding with Michael Heins, Founder of More Yum Studio. This session will guide participants in crafting compelling narratives and strong brands for their ventures. Stay tuned for more updates as we nurture these emerging innovators and entrepreneurs at Heriot-Watt University! #GlobalInnovationChallenge #HeriotWattUniversity #Entrepreneurship #Innovation #MVP #PrototypeDevelopment #FutureFounders

Reflecting on Sustainability in Diagnostic Devices Over the next couple of weeks, we are going to take a reflective look back at the work of Professor Maïwenn Kersaudy Kerhoas from when she addressed the urgent need to reduce waste from disposable diagnostic devices to where that research has taken her more recently. In the first article of this series, Professor Kersaudy-Kerhoas highlights the need for sustainable solutions, like paper microfluidics, and the role of WHO in setting waste limits by including environmental criteria in diagnostic standards due to the millions of plastic cartridges that are discarded each year. Exciting progress includes partnerships with Great Central Plastics Ltd to create lateral flow cartridges from recycled materials. This series aims to inspire a shift towards greener diagnostics for a more sustainable healthcare future. https://lnkd.in/eTsdUenq #SustainableHealthcare #Innovation #EcoDiagnostics #WasteReduction #BioPlastics #PointOfCare #healthandcaretechnolgies #healthtechinnovation
