Today we're running a GuildHE Research Workshop led by The 1752 Group/UKCGE: Developing a toolkit for addressing harassment and sexual misconduct experienced by PGR students. The 1752 Group, a research and campaigning organisation addressing sexual misconduct in higher education, is partnering with UKCGE (the UK Council for Graduate Education) to produce a toolkit for HE institutions setting out what these requirements mean for postgraduate researchers and supervisors. GuildHE Research has set up this opportunity for our members to contribute to the development of the toolkit and ensure that the toolkit captures the full diversity of PGRs and institutions in the HE sector. What a fabulous day: a breakfast seminar hosted by the Higher Education Policy Institute and Advance HE about HE models at which I saw many friends and members (BIMM University, Rose Bruford College, Bath Spa University to name a few)… a late-morning strategy discussion with the LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) senior leadership team, and a wonderful tour of their theatre spaces (see photos!)… a long walk through Victoria Embankment Gardens to soak in the spring vibes and get those steps in… an afternoon spent talking about innovative and responsive HE delivery models as illustrated by one of our newest members, Corndel College London (CCL), which focuses entirely on degree apprenticeships (for now…) A day like today is exactly why I wanted this role: To engage with and build up our community, to think collaboratively and creatively with colleagues about how we navigate what’s to come, and to learn new ways to support our members—I’m so grateful to have this job. Now off to spend an evening with Alison Johns FRSA and the AdvanceHE board. See ya’ll tomorrow! What an honour—congratulations to our beloved GuildHE member The Place on this magnificent patronage. If the Duke of Edinburgh can see the value of small, specialist creative arts institutions, so can we all! Clare Connor Professor Ken Sloan Tara McNicholas ACIM Dr Kate Wicklow, FRSA
The Place is delighted to confirm that His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT GCVO has accepted an invitation to become Royal Patron of The Place. The Duke of Edinburgh’s patronage comes at a critically important time of advocacy for the creative and performing arts, to ensure that dance continues to remain accessible to all, create opportunities for young people, enrich communities and drive growth in our world class creative industries. At a recent visit of his Royal Highness, we were honoured to share a meaningful insight into the impact of our work and the extraordinary community here at The Place, across our theatre, artist support and specialist dance education programmes, including our world-leading London Contemporary Dance School. The Duke of Edinburgh has always had a keen interest in the arts and formerly worked in theatre and television production, before becoming a full-time working member of the Royal Family. Through his patronages, His Royal Highness champions the arts and the opportunities they offer for young people to develop their confidence and skills. We are grateful for His Royal Highness’ engagement and deep appreciation for the arts, and look forward to working together to support the future of our sector and ensure access for young people to creative education and opportunities. https://lnkd.in/em5hqKhg

Starting shortly, we’re thrilled to be hosting an exclusive Masterclass Panel event for the students of GuildHE members in partnership with The Macmillan Prize for Illustration focusing on how illustrators can build a successful career in publishing. Chaired by Professor Paul Fieldsend-Danks, VC of Arts University Plymouth and Director of GuildHE Creative, Pan Macmillan Art Directors Chris Inns and Rachel Vale will be offering a wealth of publishing experience, and insights into their design processes and work, and are joined by picture book creator Diane Ewen, who will bring her illustrator perspective to the panel. The discussion will delve into children’s books and look at how iconic book covers are created and designed, how picture books move from artwork roughs to a beautiful finished storybook, and how publishers work collaboratively with creative talent. The prestigious Macmillan Prize for Illustration is marking 40 years since its inception. This morning we are hosting a key bespoke session exclusively for GuildHE members, led by Mills & Reeve education law sector specialists, on the critical aspects of a university’s legal and regulatory obligations in respect of student and staff harassment and sexual misconduct, including in respect of new Office for Students Condition E6. Mills & Reeve's specialists Siân Jones-Davies and Siân Jackson will be facilitating discussion of key requirements and expectations and the challenges raised for universities in both the student and staff arenas. We will also consider what the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education has most recently published in a casework note and case summaries.
