Wellcome/ CRUK Gurdon Institute
Research Services
We are a world-leading centre for research at the interface between developmental biology and cancer biology.
About us
Our mission is to understand the fundamental mechanisms of normal development, to determine how these mechanisms are subverted in cancer and other diseases, and to use this knowledge to develop new therapies. The Institute is embedded within the University of Cambridge, with superb infrastructure core-funded by Wellcome and Cancer Research UK. Our location facilitates interactions across the University as well as with the vibrant technical hub of Silicon Fen. The Institute was founded in 1991 according the vision of John Gurdon and Ron Laskey, to bring together expertise in two research areas: developmental biology and cancer biology. Well over 1000 researchers at different levels have worked and trained with us, and we now house 18 research groups including many that began life in the earliest years.

🤩 Thrilled to see our work on murine oesophageal #Epithelioids published in Nature Genetics, after many years of hard work alongside Albert Herms during our postdoc at Phil Jones' lab Wellcome Sanger Institute and built on the foundational work by Maria P. Alcolea https://lnkd.in/dB2ZckY9 …further developed at Antoran lab at Wellcome/ CRUK Gurdon Institute University of Cambridge, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Aragón - IIS Aragón, ARAID administracion, this technique paves the way for new discoveries in #stemcell biology, making research with primary epithelial cells more accessible than ever before. Epithelioids harness the #regenerative capacity of the original tissue to create 3D cultures that maintain proliferation, differentiation and cell density, closely mimicking in vivo tissue dynamics and structure, while keeping genomic stability for up to a year. Thanks to its spectacular expansion capabilities, reduced costs and flexibility, mouse oesophageal Epithelioids greatly impact #3Rs by reducing the number of mice needed in research. Epithelioids enable the study of #epithelial-immune crosstalk by co-culturing with #immune cells. These cells infiltrate and differentiate, partially mimicking the immune landscape of the original tissue. This extensive work over the years was made possible thanks to the support from various funding bodies and institutions: Wellcome Trust, Wellcome Sanger Institute, Cancer Research UK (CRUK), CRUK-RadNet-Cambridge Wellcome/ CRUK Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge, National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs), Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Aragón - IIS Aragón, ARAID administracion, Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) and Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. Huge thanks to Phil (Prof. Philip Jones Wellcome Sanger Institute) for his unwavering support, the freedom to work independently in an exceptional environment with an outstanding team, and his passion for science, which has always inspired us. #Bonustrack at Antoranlab Wellcome/ CRUK Gurdon Institute and Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Aragón - IIS Aragón, we’ve developed further Epithelioids to study how #environment affects #mutant #landscape in humans and to model #tumour #evolution and tissue #toxicity during clinical treatments. Exciting findings on the way. Stay tuned!

Don't miss the feature and video that explore Prof Azim Surani’s fundamental contribution to mammalian epigenetic inheritance and gene regulation.
It was an absolute pleasure to work with the inspiring Professor Azim Surani - pictured here at the Wellcome/ CRUK Gurdon Institute with our film-maker Jonny Settle - as he told us the story of his life in science. Be inspired by his journey of discovery: https://lnkd.in/ePDXVC9x #Cambridge #UniversityOfCambridge #Genetics

I am very happy to share that my first article just came out! Thanks to joining the forces of VIB, The Netherlands Cancer Institute and Wellcome/ CRUK Gurdon Institute, we were able to show how natural processes occurring in the breast can influence cancer progression among women carrying Brca1 mutation. Big congratulations to my co-authors Hendrik Messal and Hristina Hristova and the supervisors of this project Colinda Scheele, Jacco van Rheenen and Benjamin D. Simons. Thank you and have a good reading session! https://lnkd.in/dhk-sejy
