Ann Hartland, Deputy CEO and Growth Director at Cedar, brings vibrant energy to the role of “growth director.” As she puts it, “Anywhere there's any bit of growth, I'm in.” Whether it’s business development, client expansion, or personal development, Ann is at the heart of it. A graduate of the Level 7 leadership apprenticeship, Ann reflects, “What I loved about it the most is I love learning… even the process of learning, not just the subject The key was coaching: “let's start coaching our people because they want it and it just breaks down barriers, blockers, whatever's getting someone's way so that they can do a better job and feel better doing their job as well.” Quoting from her learnings, she cites Daniel Pink’s Drive: “autonomy, mastery, and purpose,” Bruce Daisley’s “voice” addition, and David Rock’s SCARF model: “status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness.” These frameworks helped her understand how people react and how to build better teams. One standout initiative was using Gustaf Rossetti’s Culture Canvas across her organization: “It was the starting point of re-looking at who we were as a company.” It even led to a new, simplified purpose statement: Be bold, be real, make a difference—co-created by the whole team. “It's when it all sort of came together. I'm interested when the course sort of seemed to make sense for me, which is what is a progressive organisation, why it's important, tools to help your organization become a progressive organisation.” She champions a “people-first” mindset: “If your people like what they do, they’ll want to be involved… and do the work very well.” Yet, she acknowledges: “It can seem soft, but it’s not. It’s strategic.” Her biggest aha? “It all came together when I realised it starts with purpose.” Plus me and Maureen Egbe on what brings us joy. Today was the final session of the Happy Ltd leadership programme I’ve been doing. With significant changes to our staff team and the way we work over the last 12-18 months I wanted to take part in some training which would help me to lead an organisation with a positive, thriving culture. This programme has not only been inspiring, but practical. We’ve covered everything from psychological safety to communication styles, from resilience to what it means to be a multiplier not a diminisher. So much learning, and so many great strategies to apply. It’s been wonderfully energising and I’ve met some amazing leaders from different sectors too. I shall miss the monthly sessions, but we’ve set up a What’s App group! Very happy to chat to anyone who might be interested in doing the programme.
