Annnnnnnd breathe! What a week that was for the Haruko team in Singapore. The iconic Marina Bay Sands towers sparkled in the Singapore sunshine as they welcomed the crowds to (probably) the biggest crypto event of the year. TOKEN2049 is never dull and this year was no exception with the air positively electrified with the conference buzz. With 2 full days of thought provoking sessions across 4 stages and 5 floors of exhibition space, the conference was a sight to behold and 700+ side events meant there were always places to be and people to see. Over the course of the week, our team made new connections, gleaned insights and shared ideas with peers from across the whole spectrum of digital assets. We’d like to thank all our clients, prospective clients, partners and friends that took the time to speak with us over the last few days – we’re looking forward to continuing the conversations in the weeks ahead! Trading BTC volatility - do you have the right toolkit? BTC volatility surfaces are predicting moves of 2% for NFP, 3% for CPI and 10% for the upcoming US elections. Turning points of interest rate cycles normally fuel market volatility. Questions around if, when and how much, will drive the direction of the next move in many global markets - BTC, with more institutional interest than ever, is no exception. It's not a surprise that there is a large amount of future volatility priced into macro events. Deribit being the largest and most liquid exchange in BTC options is the source of pricing for many trading the market. Most market participants fit an SVI model to individual maturities of options. This is indeed a decent fit and reasonable for price takers. However, it doesn't tell you why the 25 October expiry is so much cheaper than the 8 November one. As an OTC market maker or a relative value trader in the options market, you need a more sophisticated modelling toolkit which allows you to build a surface bottom up from smooth forward volatility, spot-vol correlation and vol-of-vol. You then have to explicitly put your view on the size of event moves and aggregate to get a view on the market. Equipped with your model, you are then able to see value opportunities across maturities and events. We used the Haruko volatility modelling tools to show you a sample of currently priced event weights. What tools are important to you when trading BTC volatility? #haruko #btc #cryptooptions #nfp #uselections
