We’re excited to announce that hot on the heels of our Gold award in the World Habitat Awards, Hastings Commons has been shortlisted for The Pineapples 2025 Place in Progress award with IF_DO, Purcell, Buxton, 8Build, Webb Yates, Max Fordham and Simple Works. These awards are renowned for highlighting projects that make a positive social, environmental and economic impact. They’ve recognised Hastings Commons as contributing to local urban life through our community-rooted approach to neighbourhood transformation. We take on difficult and derelict buildings in the White Rock neighbourhood of Hastings and bring them into custody for community benefit in perpetuity. We use ‘phased organic development’ to renovate them to high environmental standards and bring them into use as affordable homes, capped-rent workspaces and social spaces of all kinds. Hastings Commons community land trust is a ‘forever organisation’, designed to sustain and nurture these assets for the long term.

Hastings Commons are honoured to announce that we have been awarded the prestigious 2025 World Habitat award in partnership with UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme). As the only project in the UK recognized among nine global winners, this achievement highlights our commitment to community-led solutions for the housing crisis and beyond. Through Hastings Commons and the wider Hastings Housing Alliance we are leading the way to demonstrate community-led solutions to the housing crisis that also tackle other problems such as dereliction, decarbonisation, social cohesion and economic development. CEO, Dr Jess Steele OBE, "What we do at Hastings Commons is much more than housing: this is community-led regeneration of a whole neighbourhood that had been seriously neglected, showing that there is a real alternative to top down models of regeneration and development."

Community groups like Hastings Commons show the power of local action. By converting derelict buildings into affordable homes and a venue, they've revitalised Hastings and empowered residents. Hastings Youth Commons have their sights set on something BIG for the young people of Hastings! 🚀 The energy during these workshops was infectious! This work has been one of the biggest highlights of my year so far! Speaking about the experience, Youth Programme Manager, Sidney said: “It was fantastic working with you and I especially enjoyed the energy you brought to the space.
