Wood Studies | The design team for the Hellems Arts and Sciences Building and Mary Rippon Theatre Capital Renewal Project at University of Colorado Boulder approached campus design principles by integrating a regionally inspired material palette and emphasizing the use of #wood throughout the building. One of their core strategies was to honor the historic charm of the Charles Klauder buildings (1922 & 1938) while modernizing them to meet contemporary needs. In line with the project's foundational design principle of 'peeling back the layers' of the historic structure, the design team also focused on employing authentic, regionally inspired materials. Walnut paneling and trim, drawing from the hues and textures found in the bark of local tree species and the existing wood finishes of the building, are prominently featured throughout. The broader interior material palette extends these regional influences, fostering an environment that resonates with the natural allure of the surrounding landscape, all while paying homage to the enduring legacy of the original architecture. — Scroll for a look at the CU Boulder #renovation project now underway: 1. RLB’s analysis of output per worker, a simpler measure of productivity than the Australian Bureau of Statistics multifactor productivity measure, has found that despite a significant rise in the number of professional workers – up 64% between 2003 and 2023 – output per professional worker dropped by 17.2%. Meanwhile, the number of tradespeople and labourers increased by 40%, with their output per worker rising 33%. The analysis suggests that the growing proportion of professional employees may be contributing to inefficiencies in the sector, potentially driving up costs for consumers and hindering essential projects like housing developments. Turning bold ideas into breathtaking reality! “Iconic” is an overused word. But no other word comes close to describing the $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf Integrated Resort Development that opens in a few weeks’ time. Ahead of the official opening of the first stage on Thursday 29 August, RLB congratulates an exceptional team, led by the visionary Destination Brisbane Consortium, that came together to turn bold ideas into breathtaking reality. A world-class hotel in The Star Grand, a state-of-the-art casino and events centre, awe-inspiring sky-high vistas and fine dining experiences… every element of the Queen’s Wharf celebrates the river city’s future and positions it as a global tourism magnet in the lead up to the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. Queen’s Wharf embodies more than a grand design. It represents a decade of dedication and meticulous planning by a talented project team including construction partner Multiplex and Cottee Parker Architects. RLB provided full-service quantity surveying, comprehensive program audit services and full pre- and post-contract cost services, led by the indefatigable Matt Long, who has spent 10 years bringing imagination to life on this city-shaping project. As Matt says: “Seeing Queen’s Wharf evolve has been incredibly rewarding. It is proof that dedication and teamwork can turn ambitious dreams into extraordinary realities.” Here’s to the beginning of a new era for Brisbane. Yesterday, our Adelaide team was honoured with a unique visit from the SA Police Greys (Horses), expressing gratitude for our dedicated efforts on the SAPOL Barracks Relocation project. 🐎 This significant project involves relocating all SAPOL divisions from the Thebarton Police Barracks site to pave the way for the new Women's and Children's Hospital. For RLB, this meant managing 13 'fast-tracked' separate projects across Adelaide, amounting to an impressive $160 million. Our Director, Tom Bernard, extended his thanks to our team, which includes Joel Newton, Sasha Thelning, Brianna Tulla, Harry Vincent, and the Engineering Services team led by Tony Catanzariti. This visit was a powerful reminder of the impact our work has on the community. We are proud to contribute to such important projects and to support the future of South Australia's infrastructure. #RLB #SAPOL #TeamRLB #Adelaide #Construction #ProjectManagement #CommunityImpact #Gratitude

The first half of 2024 was characterised by persistent core inflation and ongoing commodity price volatility due to fresh and prolonged geopolitical shocks, with global growth expected to come in at 3.2%, slowing from the 3.3% growth in the preceding year. Based on our regional survey on construction cost escalation issues, interest rates have overtaken wage cost as the third most influential factor in the first half of 2024, reflecting the strain longer-than-anticipated high interest rates have on the region’s construction industry. In this report, majority of the region’s construction industry continues to reflect largely stabilized material cost in 1Q 2024 compared to the previous quarter, while increase in labour costs have been reported in four of the same cities. Tender price movements are expected to continue escalating in 2024, with a wide range of Y-o-Y movement compared to 2023. https://lnkd.in/gkX_eGrN

This scenario suggests a continuation of the upward trend in labour costs, a critical component of overall project expenditure.” Key points in this issue: ▪ Impact on project delivery ▪ National forces driving cost pressures ▪ Policy and economic landscape ▪ Labour market shortfall a critical challenge ▪ Cost pressure impact on the states ▪ RLB tender price index annual % uplifts as at Q2 2024 Read RLB's analysis ▸ https://lnkd.in/ga4vhMS9
