Today we have launched an informal consultation on draft inclusion and diversity guidance we’re producing alongside the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. The guidance will help ensure research is designed to include people who could be impacted by the findings, and that people underserved by research are not overlooked. We hope that this will help increase the diversity of people taking part in clinical trials and clinical investigations. To help ensure that the guidance works for everyone we want to know what you think. Making the UK a great place for health and social care research
About us
The HRA was established in December 2011 to protect and promote the interests of patients and the public in health research, and to streamline the regulation of research. Many members of the public want the opportunity to participate in research. We make sure that health research involving them is ethically reviewed and approved, that people are provided with the information they need to help them decide whether they wish to take part, and that their opportunity to do so is maximised by simplifying the processes by which high quality research is assessed. In doing this, we will help to build both public confidence and participation in health research, and so improve the nation’s health.

McPin has joined with other health, research and social care bodies in a pledge to improve public involvement in research. The Shared Commitment to Public Involvement in Health and Social Care Research statement, developed by the HRA (Health Research Authority) with people with lived experience, research participants and leaders in health and social care research, will ensure public involvement is embedded across the health and social care research system. Our research director, Vanessa Pinfold says: “The McPin Foundation is looking forward to working with others in the shared commitment partnership to continue to develop public involvement in health and social research, building upon over 30 years of lived experience leadership in mental health research from across the sector. "Our work is all focused on how lived experience expertise and the knowledge generated from working with experiential expertise can transform research findings and processes. On 25 September the World Health Organization published new guidance to improve the design, conduct and oversight of clinical trials across the world. We were proud that the HRA was named in the report as an example of an organisation providing regulatory and ethics approval for research on health and social care. Research Ethics Committees were recognised as an important part of the ethical oversight of health and social care research, in particular the steps they take to ensure the rights and welfare of participants are protected. The guidance also recommended that for an effective review of clinical trials regulators need to work together and co-ordinate the approvals process. The Integrated Research Application System (IRAS) is highlighted as an example of this in practice.
