The UK government's newly unveiled Timber in Construction Roadmap marks a pivotal shift towards sustainable building practices. By promoting the use of timber in construction, this initiative aims to reduce the built environment's carbon footprint—currently accounting for approximately 25% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions—and expedite the delivery of 1.5 million homes within this Parliament. Only 9% of new-build homes in England were timber-framed in 2019, in contrast to Scotland, where this figure was 92%. With England’s low rates of building with timber relative to other countries, there is an opportunity to unlock this industry at scale and speed. As a result, the Climate Change Committee recommended that the government develop new policies to increase the use of wood in construction. For HEMSPAN Ltd, a leader in bio-based construction technologies, this roadmap aligns seamlessly with our mission to innovate climate-positive housing solutions. Our development of sustainable, low-carbon building materials, including our #BIOHAUS® system, captures and stores atmospheric carbon and contributes to a circular economy. This strategic emphasis on timber and other sustainable materials signifies a transformative moment for the construction industry. It underscores the critical role of eco-friendly materials in addressing climate change, fostering economic growth, and achieving housing targets. HEMSPAN Ltd is committed to advancing these objectives by delivering scalable, sustainable building solutions that benefit both communities and the planet. • The UK housing sector is at a pivotal point, facing challenges in affordability and sustainability. The thought-provoking, New Homes in New Ways exhibition at the Building Centre spotlights the evolution of home construction, emphasising Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to tackle some of the issues. HEMSPAN Ltd recognises that the future of housing hinges on quality and sustainability, not just quantity. Embracing climate-positive living, we are actively engaging in discussions to shape the future of housing. The current housing landscape in the UK often falls short in crucial aspects- energy efficiency, durability, and environmental impact. By examining case studies of inadequate temporary housing and observing the social housing models of neighbouring countries, it's evident that a shift towards considering the environment and community is imperative. Traditional construction methods are insufficient in meeting the challenges posed by a changing climate and a growing population. We must enhance our practices, prioritise quality, and integrate MMC techniques like modular builds and off-site fabrication to improve efficiency and maintain high standards. The construction industry must pivot towards using low-carbon materials and energy-efficient designs to align with net-zero targets before it's too late. Making Climate-Positive Living the standard, not the exception, can not only reduce carbon emissions but also contribute to offsetting them through thoughtful design and materials, fostering healthier living environments. HEMSPAN Ltd is spearheading this transformative journey, enthusiastic about the prospect of setting new benchmarks. By championing MMC and sustainable building methods, we aim to not only construct homes for the present but also safeguard the future. Together, as we push the boundaries of construction possibilities, let's collaborate to establish a housing market that delivers homes as resilient and forward-looking as their occupants. #NewHomesInNewWays #SustainableHousing #MMC #ClimatePositiveLiving #HEMSPAN #BIOHAUS #FutureofHousing #NetZero #BuildingTheFuture #Sustainability #ConstructionInnovation #Must
