The UK government's newly unveiled Timber in Construction Roadmap marks a pivotal shift towards sustainable building practices. By promoting the use of timber in construction, this initiative aims to reduce the built environment's carbon footprint—currently accounting for approximately 25% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions—and expedite the delivery of 1.5 million homes within this Parliament. Only 9% of new-build homes in England were timber-framed in 2019, in contrast to Scotland, where this figure was 92%. With England’s low rates of building with timber relative to other countries, there is an opportunity to unlock this industry at scale and speed. As a result, the Climate Change Committee recommended that the government develop new policies to increase the use of wood in construction.
