The OBR has confirmed our planning reforms will unlock an extra 170,000 homes. That’s £6.8bn in growth, and over £3bn in new money for our public services. That's the value of not just taxing & spending - but doing the hard yards to rip up the red tape and take on the blockers.

The world is changing - it is becoming more insecure and more dangerous. Europe is facing a once-in-a-generation moment for its collective security and governments are having to spend more on national defence. Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves visited Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) in Shropshire to announce a further £2.2bn uplift in defence spending for 2025/2026 which will be confirmed in today’s Spring Statement. This will help us invest in new advanced weaponry for British troops and provide better housing for military families.

Unnecessary regulation chokes competition and stifles businesses. That’s why we’re taking action to unleash industry across the UK and drive growth. Our regulatory system encourages innovation and economic growth. Combined with our Industrial Strategy, our Plan for Change aims to make the UK the best place to startup, invest, and thrive. This week, the Chancellor visited BNY's new offices in Manchester, and spoke with CEO Robin Vince. They discussed the government's Better Regulation Action Plan, which is set to reduce the administrative cost of regulation on businesses by a quarter.

When I became Chancellor, I was clear that improving economic outcomes for women is not just a matter of fairness, but it is key to unlocking the growth our country needs, and the numbers speak for themselves. Equalising women’s participation rates in the workforce with those of men would bring an extra 1.3 million people of working age into the economy. And, if women started and scaled new businesses at the same rate as men, it could provide a £250 billion boost to the UK economy. That’s why the government is supporting initiatives like the Invest in Women Taskforce, which has successfully secured over £250m for female entrepreneurs - and why we are working with employers to harness talent and creativity through the Women’s Business Council. It was a pleasure to welcome The King's Trust into Downing Street today as part of their Brilliant Breakfast initiative, providing a platform for young women starting out in their careers who are creating opportunities and making a difference in their communities and industries. To any young women reading this post today, please know this government is working to make sure there’s no ceiling on your ambitions, hopes and dreams for the future.
