  • Welcome to our new Outreach and Widening Participation Officer Karolina Rawdanowicz (Kaz) 🤗 A recent Robinson graduate herself, Kaz brings a fantastic mix of student knowledge and understanding combined with a wealth of experience working on various aspects of University outreach and events. “I’m very excited to be joining the Admissions Team as Outreach and Widening Participation Officer, working with schools in the UK to encourage and assist students in applying to Cambridge … but particularly Robinson! I first joined Robinson back in 2021 as a fresher, coming from Birmingham to start my undergrad, slightly terrified by the idea of ‘Cambridge’. I was the first person from my school to be offered a place, and had only ever heard myths and speculations about it (not all of which were untrue, of course!) In my first year, I was the RCSA Class Act Officer and worked closely with the Admissions Team to launch our Pegasus Scholars programme for students like myself, who had experienced disruption in their education and/or little support on their journey. Since then, I’ve actively engaged in the life of the college, as well as connecting with alumni, and more recently, graduated with a First Class degree in English. This would not have been possible without the amazing support in college, so I’m keen to continue and extend this support to our potential applicants, working closely with our staff and students to show Robinson as the interesting and welcoming place that it is”. Follow @robinsoncollegeoutreach on Instagram for news about Robinson Outreach events, residentials and advice on applying to University of Cambridge and Robinson College. We’re delighted to have you as part of the Robinson team Kaz! #robinsoncollege #outreach #WideningParticipation

Congratulations to King’s Ely Prep pupil, Rowan, for his success in this year’s New Directions Composition Prize, which is organised by Robinson College, Cambridge! 🎶 Rowan, who is an Ely Cathedral Chorister, has been Highly Commended in the 'ages 10-13 category' of the national University of Cambridge competition. Rowan, who will be in Year 8 when the new academic year starts in September, submitted a wonderful piece of music that he composed for our 'Prep Christmas Carol Composition Competition', based on the renowned John Clare poem, 'The Winter's Spring'. Rowan won this competition with his piece, which sounded beautiful when it was sung by a group of our Music Staff and Senior vocalists at King's Ely Prep's Carol Service at Ely Cathedral in December. Rowan said: “I feel really proud to have achieved a Highly Commended, as this is the first national composition competition that I have entered. I also feel grateful that the judging panel enjoyed my piece. I love creating joyful choral music alongside more thoughtful pieces, such as 'The Winter’s Spring'. I am inspired by the work of John Rutter because it is so joyful, Bob Chilcott because he composed the Jazz Mass, and Charles Villiers Stanford as ‘For Lo, I raise up’ is one of my favourite pieces to sing." The New Directions Composition Prize aims to share the joy of music by encouraging young people to create their own original composition. This year, entries were listened to and marked by Dr Jeremy Thurlow, who is Director of Studies in Music at Robinson College. The competition is open to anyone, regardless of their musical experience, and there are three categories – ages 10-13, ages 14-16, and ages 17-18. • Celebrating the work of Gillespie, Kidd and Coia, Robinson College Library “They are Modernists, yet their work is also a reaction against the dogmas of Modernism” From: Lessons in Architecture: Film & Multimedia Proposal, (Archive ref: RCRF/1/2/8) Gillespie, Kidd and Coia are celebrated for their distinctive and innovative post-war architecture and contribution to European Modernism. Their work includes churches, school and college buildings, housing and hospitals. A large volume of their output was Scottish religious buildings; a reflection of their location away from the London architectural scene. One of the outstanding features of the Robinson Library is the play of light and shadow, achieved through the modulation of light by the vertical timber fins aligned with the glazing grid. This was a constant theme in their work, as Mark Baines notes: “Light substantially characterises and memorably informs the buildings of Gillespie, Kidd and Coia by virtue of the often audacious, but invariably subtle exploitation and manipulation of its varied effects in the controlled revelation of form, space, texture and colour.” The window configurations, however, go beyond the modulation of light to the staging and framing of interior and exterior views; a technique GKC referred to as ‘expressive fenestration.’ The exhibition will be in Robinson College Library throughout the Michaelmas Term: https://lnkd.in/erDXvKMJ

Give it up for archaeology student Joseph Lewis, who recently handed in his PhD thesis! 👏 Since submitting his thesis, Joe has been working as a postdoctoral researcher at Cambridge's McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research. "Within my role, I use computational models to understand the movement patterns of tropical hunter-gatherers and how this influences information transmission and disease spread," Joe explained. Joe also shares some handy advice to those hoping to submit their PhD thesis 💡 "I recommend saying no to other obligations. It's all too easy to take on more than you can chew (we love what we do, after all!). "Prioritise the PhD and set realistic goals. For example, it might be that you write 500 words a day, or 500 words a week – but importantly, it's what is achievable for you. Don't be afraid to take time off or reach out to others if you need it." Joe is currently doing a PhD in Archaeology at Robinson College, Cambridge and the Department of Archaeology. Huge congratulations, Joe! 📘 📷 Department of Archaeology #Postgraduate #CambridgeUniversity

What do lawyers do all day?⚖️🤔 I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend a two-day law residential hosted by Slaughter and May at Robinson College, Cambridge Where this question was answered eloquently. The experience was both enlightening and inspiring, providing a deep dive into the world of law and the daily workings of a top-tier firm. Day 1: We kicked off with an engaging talk about Slaughter and May and operations and the diverse areas of law they specialise in. I was particularly fascinated by the firm's work in corporate finance and how large transactions require collaboration across the entire firm. The highlight of the day was a negotiation task where we worked in pairs to negotiate a private acquisition merger deal tailored to our client's needs. This exercise underscored the importance of understanding your client and the art of compromise. Day 2: We delved into a dynamic law workshop that allowed us to debate a social matter and its legal implications. My group focused on the motion "Thought crimes should be prosecuted," which challenged us to draw on our public speaking, critical thinking, and proactive skills. The day concluded with a Q&A session featuring trainees Alice Boneham and Ed, who provided invaluable insights into the training contract process. Additionally, the event featured a drinks reception and a formal dinner, offering ample networking opportunities with peers and professionals alike. It wouldn’t have been so great if I hadn’t met my new connections Rachael Awogbemi Princhipessa Esamah-Bamidele and Lia Yesufu Overall, the Slaughter and May residential was a phenomenal experience that deepened my understanding of the legal profession and honed my skills in negotiation, debate, and client interaction. A big thank you to Slaughter and May for hosting such an enriching event! #Law #LegalCareer #SlaughterandMay #CorporateFinance #NegotiationSkills #PublicSpeaking #Networking

Hello Network, Thrilled to share that I have just completed a remarkable 2-day law residential hosted by Slaughter and May at Robinson College, Cambridge. The experience was truly enriching, offering a deep dive into various aspects of the law while providing insight into life at a Magic Circle law firm. Day 1: We kicked off with a comprehensive session on studying law at Cambridge with esteemed law fellow Brian D. Sloan. He generously shared his expertise and tips on pursuing a law degree, offering invaluable insights into the stages of the Cambridge application and the preparation required for the interview stage. Following this, we attended an engaging talk about the operations of Slaughter and May and their specializations. I was particularly fascinated by the corporate finance aspect and the importance of mergers and acquisitions in relation to the various businesses the firm services. The highlight of the day was a negotiation task where we worked in pairs to negotiate warranties on behalf of a "client" to ensure their needs were met. This activity taught me the importance of understanding clients through communication and demonstrating this through legal reasoning. Day 2: We engaged in a legal workshop exploring the advocacy side of the law, which included debating a thought-provoking social matter and delivering presentations on the topic. My group focused on whether "thought crimes should be prosecuted." We relied heavily on our critical thinking skills to dissect the question and form a solid argument, and then on our communication skills to present our argument to the cohort. The day concluded with a Q&A session featuring trainee solicitors Alice Boneham and Ed, providing valuable insight into the responsibilities of a solicitor and key information about the training contract process. The residential also included various networking opportunities with peers and professionals. I enjoyed connecting with like-minded individuals such as Lia Yesufu , Princhipessa Esamah-Bamidele, and Aicha B. which was both inspiring and fun. Overall, the Slaughter and May residential was a wonderful experience that broadened my knowledge of the legal profession and honed my communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this experience so enriching. Excited to apply what I've learned and continue this journey in the legal field! #CambridgeUniversity #RobinsonCollege #SlaughterAndMay #LawResidential #LegalStudies #Networking #FutureSolicitors #ProfessionalDevelopment
