Housing Ombudsman

Government Administration

We are an independent, impartial service that resolves disputes involving tenants and leaseholders of social landlords.

About us

Our role is to resolve disputes involving members of the Housing Ombudsman Scheme and support effective landlord-tenant dispute resolution by others. Members of the scheme include housing associations and local authority landlords plus some private landlords who are voluntary members. Our service is independent and impartial. Our vision is Housing Matters: Fairness Matters which recognises the importance of housing to people’s lives. We ensure the fair and impartial resolution of housing complaints, locally where possible. When things go wrong we put things rights and encourage learning from outcomes. We help improve landlord and resident relationships. We role model the service we expect of others. For further information about the Housing Ombudsman Service see our website.

  • Our latest learning from severe maladministration report is out today. It focuses on the ‘Big 6’ building safety compliance areas. The cases show the human impact of key obligations not being fulfilled to individuals. By grouping these cases together, it is possible to map reoccurring points of service failure and identify areas for learning. Complaints can act as an early warning sign for landlords. To test whether this is an isolated issue or further action is required to prevent repeated failings impacting other residents. Landlords mentioned in this report are: - A2Dominion - Barking and Dagenham Council - Birmingham City Council - Camden Council - Clarion - Home Group - Hyde Housing - L&Q - Lambeth Council - Lewisham Council - Norwich Council - Peabody - Richmond Housing Partnership - Riverside - Soho Housing - Southend Council Read the full report today: https://ow.ly/MGgE50VkF47 #ukhousing #LocalGov #theBig6

  • “I am a huge advocate for learning and for being an apprentice. If you ever get the chance to do this I would say, go for it!” This week, we are shining the spotlight on the Housing Ombudsman’s first ever apprentice. Sana is completing a Level 3 Learning and Development Practitioner course as part of an apprenticeship with the Sector Learning and Development team. “Since joining the team in October 2024, I have observed the delivery of our webinars, and workshops. It has been really insightful seeing everyone's different delivery styles. It's also really positive to see how engaged the landlords are during these sessions and how keen they are to learn and improve.” Find out more about careers at the Housing Ombudsman Service: https://ow.ly/7Wxv50VeJLB
