The high incidence of injuries and trauma for people in #Gaza has exponentially increased the need for physical rehabilitation services. Severe limb injuries (affecting up to 17,500 people) are the main driver of rehabilitation needs – with spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and major burn injuries also significant contributors. Thousands of prosthetics and assistive devices are urgently needed at a time when the health system has completely collapsed. The World Health Organisation indicates that only 13% of needs for assistive products have been met. Prosthetics, wheelchairs and other assistive devices are not getting into Gaza, despite the best efforts of HI’s teams. #CeaseFireNOW

    • There will be a significant increase in the number of people with disabilities in Gaza. Even a seemingly minor injury or fracture, if it is not treated properly or becomes infected, could lead to complications and lifelong disabilities.

Naima, 5 lives in #Bangladesh. She was born with a congenital impairment affecting her left arm. HI has provided Naima with sports equipment and #rehabilitation sessions to improve her physical mobility. Additionally, taking part in inclusive activities with other children has helped to boost Naima’s confidence and improve her social integration! 🌟 “My daughter wants to inspire and support other children with disabilities. She wants to tell them that they can achieve their goals and lead fulfilling lives despite the difficulties. I'm incredibly proud of her dreams”, said her father. 💙 #Inclusion

HI is deeply concerned by the recent airstrikes on camps for displaced Palestinians in northern Gaza, the most recent of which occurred on the grounds of Al-Aqsa Hospital on 13 October. The attack ignited a devastating fire that quickly engulfed the camp, and rescue teams are now urgently searching for survivors. This attack comes amid a broader humanitarian crisis where civilians remain stranded in their homes, trapped by ongoing bombardment and fighting. Mohammad Atallah from our team told us: “I feel so unsafe. The scariest and most difficult thing is displacement. The second hardest thing is not having any food or water. It has been two weeks since we received any aid. Losing my life is easier than being displaced because there is nowhere safe to go. When people are displaced, they don’t just lose their homes but also their dignity because it means the start of yet another misery. The constant bombing means we haven’t slept for days - every moment feels like it could be our last.” HI urgently calls for all parties involved in the conflict to agree to an immediate ceasefire, respect international humanitarian law, and ensure the unconditional release of hostages. The war must end, and the protection of civilians and their dignity must be prioritised. Read our full statement 👇 https://lnkd.in/eGt6p8Fv #CeaseFireNOW

The heavy bombing of populated areas has taken a devastating toll on civilians in #Gaza, leaving a generation of people injured, maimed and with permanent disabilities. The World Health Organisation estimates that at least one-quarter of those injured – some 22,500 people – will require ongoing trauma rehabilitation and will be left with permanent disabilities. HI's teams are on the ground in Gaza supporting people who have been left with life-changing injuries and those with existing disabilities. Will you help us continue our vital work? In #Gaza, children face a range of severe injuries due to the ongoing conflict and are in desperate need of #rehabilitation and #psychological support. In June, UNRWA estimated that up to 10 children were losing one or both of their legs each day. HI’s teams are supporting children who have lost limbs. Common types of injuries impacting children in Gaza include blast injuries, gunshot wounds, burns, head injuries and psychological trauma. Will you help us continue our vital work? • Some children think that their legs might grow back again.
This is one of the saddest things that we hear on a regular basis, when talking to children.
They tell us, we’re waiting for our legs to grow again.
It’s difficult to explain that’s not going to happen.

Today is World Mental Health Day 💚 Globally it is estimated that one in four people will face mental health issues. The risk is doubled in an emergency situation. At HI, we believe that access to mental health care is a fundamental human right. That's why our teams provide individual or group discussion sessions, emotional support and recreational activities, especially for children. In 2023, HI’s teams have supported more than 580,000 people around the world via our mental health and psychosocial projects. In Gaza for example, HI teams and volunteers are leading recreational activities for kids. These activities such as games, kite flying, dancing and singing, are important for children's mental health, helping to bring a moment of normalcy to children traumatised by war. 💚 #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthAwareness

Malak, a paramedic with HI's team in Lebanon, was in the office when she heard the first bombing. With no time to think, she rushed home, grabbed a few things, and left. Over a million people have been displaced in #Lebanon, and families who were forced to leave everything behind are longing for peace and a return home. No one should experience this. Only a #ceasefire can end the fear, suffering, and devastation of millions of vulnerable people caught in this conflict. #CeasefireNOW

    • "The bombing was really intense. The sound and the tremors. I was terrified. The road we took to get to my friend's house was bombed every two kilometres. It was hell. I do not want to live through that again", Malak Al-Shami, Paramedic, HI Lebanon.
