My mission is to share the science of male mental health through talks, training, coaching and corporate programmes so that you never lose the men you care about too soon
[Warning: mentions suicide] You may know that around 75% of those who die from suicide are male. But did you know that during 2021, the UK construction industry lost 2 men every working day to suicide? [1] [2] The risk is highest for those who work in elementary construction occupations. These men are almost 5x more likely to die than the average UK male (78 deaths per 100,000; versus 16 in the average UK male). Between 2015 and 2021, rates of men in those roles taking their own lives increased by 61%, outpacing even the general increase in male suicide rates in UK men. According to mental health organisations, it’s never been more acceptable to talk about mental health, and yet this doesn’t seem to be slowing the rising rates of male suicide. [3] This Movember, Anna Whiting has invited me to deliver a talk to a limited audience in London on Thu 14th November. Ibstock Futures will be hosting us at their welcoming London offices and I’ll share the stage with Shirley Heapy of The Clive Smith Foundation - an organisation who have been raising awareness of this issue since the founders lost their friend Clive. I’ll be delivering a keynote which has previously been delivered to the NHS Procurement Conferences in London and Leeds, about how there’s so much more to male mental health than simply talking. We’ll explore science-based strategies for better male mental health and how they impact the factors associated with suicide in men. At the time of posting this, there are still tickets available, so register your place and I’ll see you there! ⇩ Link to register and sources in the comments section ⇩

In today's budget, the Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves has announced £5bn of additional funding for housebuilding. £3bn of this will be in the form of support and guarantees to small housebuilders to increase the supply of housing. As always, the devil is in the detail, but this could be a good way to boost the supply of housing in the UK. She has also announced a welcome £1bn of additional funding for the removal of dangerous cladding, post Grenfell. For those in these properties, this will hopefully be some welcome relief. Now its time to enjoy that 1p cheaper pint... #budget #sustainablehomes #Ibstock
In the next 5 hours, 4 people will die from suicide in the UK and Ireland...3 of them will be men. What an inspiring day at Reaseheath College! A heartfelt thank you to Andrew Gould QTLS and Gemma Sproston for the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated educators, preparing them to guide the next generation of T Level Construction students. Together, we’re equipping these students to build a bungalow using Ash & Lacy #MechSlip system with WE ARE Ibstock - at the heart of building Ibstock #brickslips, combining theory with invaluable hands-on experience. This is just the beginning of an exciting #partnership, and sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to making it such a positive and productive day. It’s thrilling to envision how these practical skills will empower students to thrive in the industry from day one! Stay tuned for more updates as this design-to-concept bungalow takes shape and comes to life over time!
