NEW PODCAST EPISODE: On the latest episode of IEMA's #SustainableMatters podcast, we speak with Maria Benjamin, co-founder of Dodgson Wood about farming, what a diversified business can look like and how skills are key for a #sustainablefuture Maria talks with IEMA CEO Sarah Mukherjee MBE about her career journey via art school and film-making to creating a haven in nature for people to unplug and reset. Maria also founded 'The Soap Dairy', creating a natural soap from their own Jersey cows and 'Lake District Tweed', crafting products from their own wool in an ethical and sustainable way. "I went to Woolfest, where there was literally thousands of really skilled knitters, who weren't just picking up balls of wool and thinking 'oh, that's soft, I'll buy it', they wanted to know the provenance, they wanted to know the breed of sheep, you know, the details of it." Lack of focus on "green growth" in the UK Government's Spring Statement “The government campaigned at the 2024 election on a growth ticket, yet key economic analysis suggests that the UK is some way off realising this. “Net zero, nature restoration and the circular economy are all areas in which policy and investment gaps remain and the headlines from the Chancellor's Spring Statement have done very little to address this." - Martin Baxter, Deputy CEO IEMA With the UK Government placing planning reform at the centre of efforts to grow the economy, IEMA questions the lack of focus on #greengrowth... IEMA CEO Sarah Mukherjee MBE writes for Business Green on how, in the rush to persuade policy-makers, we have not made a strong enough case to the public for building a #netzero carbon economy which everyone will benefit from... "Organisations are reported as abandoning environmental and DEI initiatives ... it's high time we were vocal about a green economy that includes everyone." Read now: https://bit.ly/3DEE0b2

Is England's Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) failing to deliver what's required? IEMA members and other expert stakeholders were joined by the Environmental Audit Committee Chair, Toby Perkins MP for a roundtable discussion yesterday focused on a review and revision of the EIP. A revised EIP will be published this summer and IEMA has been feeding into this through an advisory board that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs established last year. IEMA's Director of Policy and Public Affairs, Ben Goodwin reflects on some of the key talking points including: -> Nature friendly farming -> How the EIP can be a vehicle that can join the nature agenda with the government’s growth aspirations -> The joining up of national goals with local efforts on nature recovery -> Greater clarity on monitoring and measuring EIP goal delivery -> Plus more "On the workforce point, we maintain that the Government should establish a permanent cross-government body that takes a strategic approach to delivering #greenskills and jobs growth in the economy that is tied to our long-term climate and environmental goals."
