    🔍 Mid-Year Update: Law Firm Mergers 2024 The outlook for large law firm mergers has been quiet so far this year, even as the pace of completed mergers slightly picked up in the first half of 2024. Fairfax Associates reports 29 law firm mergers finalized in the first half of 2024, surpassing the 28 deals tracked in the same period in 2023, and the 25 mergers in 2022 and 2021. Key Mergers: ◾A&O Shearman: Formed by the union of London-founded Allen & Overy and New York-founded Shearman & Sterling. Effective May 1, this merger created a legal giant with nearly 4,000 lawyers and 3,000 employees across 47 offices worldwide. ◾UB Greensfelder: Resulting from the February 1 merger of Midwest firms Ulmer & Berne and Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, forming a firm with 275 lawyers. Fairfax Associates defines large mergers as those where both firms have at least 100 lawyers. While A&O Shearman and UB Greensfelder mergers were finalized in 2024, they were announced last year. No new large law firm combinations have been announced this year, though Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders and Locke Lord have been in discussions since April, with no agreement yet announced.
