  • Spring has sprung in this week's #IWMFilm, which sees soldiers at British GHQ Montreuil playing with farm animals. This short test piece was made in 1917, either to test the film equipment at GHQ or to prove the value of film to its staff. Each week we publish a clip from IWM’s extensive film collection, spanning the First World War to the 21st century. • Were your relatives part of the VE and VJ Day generation? If so, you can help us uncover their stories as part of Letters to Loved Ones. Whether it's postcards from soldiers on the front line, letters from men, women or children on the home front, or messages from relatives who contributed to Britain’s war effort in Britain and Commonwealth countries, we're asking young people and families across the UK to share these stories on the Letters to Loved Ones website. Could a psychedelic drug change the nature of warfare? In 1964, volunteers from 41 Royal Marine Commando sought to find out. This week's #IWMFilm clip features the so-called 'Moneybags Trial', which tested the effect of LSD on the behaviour of troops in the field. Held between 27 November and 4 December, the volunteers consumed the drug before undertaking a filmed military exercise, studying its potential for non-lethally incapacitating enemy forces. Each week we publish a clip from IWM’s extensive film collection, spanning the First World War to the 21st century. Watch the film in full here: https://lnkd.in/eKPh3dhs Film: IWM (MGH 4464)

  • This #InternationalWomensDay we highlight the UK suffrage movement, which focused on securing women’s right to vote. The movement began in the 1870s and over the next few decades employed a variety of methods including disruptive tactics, marches and acts of protest. Success was finally achieved in 1928 when the vote was given to citizens aged 21 and over. Each week we publish a clip from IWM’s extensive film collection, spanning the First World War to the 21st century. • This week’s #IWMFilm clip, from IWM’s NATO collection, is taken from a documentary about the Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS). CCMS, founded in 1969, was a policy group focused on addressing environmental problems that would benefit from NATO consultation.   Juxtaposing dramatic montages of manmade pollutants with lush natural landscapes, this documentary emphasises the CCMS’s primary role – that tackling ever-prevalent environmental problems requires international collaboration. Each week we publish a clip from IWM’s extensive film collection, spanning the First World War to the 21st century. IWM has an in-perpetuity, exclusive, worldwide right to license broadcast quality video from NATO’s archival film collection following an extensive digitisation project. • Craft can be more than just a hobby; it can be a lifeline. This week’s #IWMFilm clip sees recovering British and Commonwealth troops making stuffed toy animals in a military hospital in Egypt. During the Second World War, craft as a form of therapy was encouraged to aid the development of mobility for wounded limbs. Far from a novel concept, embroidery, sewing and making in general have been adopted by recovering soldiers for centuries. Each week we publish a clip from IWM’s extensive film collection, spanning the First World War to the 21st century. • This Valentine’s Day, be careful what you say! This week's #IWMFilm clip is taken from a British propaganda film made to raise awareness of the risks of disclosing potentially sensitive information during wartime. The Careless Talk Costs Lives campaign was set up in response to security concerns on the home front where rumours were rife about enemy spies and collaborators living amongst the population. One of a series of Careless Talk films, Other Men’s Lives (1944), was aimed at factory workers. Each week we publish a clip from IWM’s extensive film collection, spanning the First World War to the 21st century. • Amidst ongoing celebrations ushering in the Year of the Snake, this week's #IWMFilm clip highlights the Lunar New Year celebrations of the Chinese Labour Corps in Noyelles, on the Western Front, in February 1918.   95,000 Chinese farm labourers were recruited by the British Government to form the Chinese Labour Corps. Through their labour and ingenuity, the Corps provided vital logistical support for British forces during the First World War. Their contribution included digging trenches, building roads, unloading ships and trains, and skilled mechanical work repairing tanks. Each week we publish a clip from IWM’s extensive film collection, spanning the First World War to the 21st century. Watch the film in full here: https://lnkd.in/eXhR86qQ. Film: IWM (IWM 168)
