🔟 𝟏𝟎 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁— 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁?
What a week it's been.
As expected, the 10th anniversary of the MSA saw a week filled with announcements, debates, reflections, and, crucially, calls for action. Here’s a roundup of key moments:
🔹 𝗠̲𝗼̲𝗻̲𝗱̲𝗮̲𝘆̲: The Home Office launched new 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. A welcome move but I continue to push the Government to legislate mandatory human rights due diligence.
🔹 𝗧̲𝘂̲𝗲̲𝘀̲𝗱̲𝗮̲𝘆̲: The 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 scrutinised whether the Act is still fit for purpose, a session I gave evidence to along with Caroline Haughey OBE KC, Kathy Betteridge (Major)(Salavation Army), Emma Hawley (Barnado's), and 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗵 𝗕𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗿-𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀.
Meanwhile, the House of Commons voted to reject key amendments to the 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹 that would have strengthened supply chain protections. Rather than legislate, the Government instead vowed to tackle forced labour in supply chains.
🔹 𝗪̲𝗲̲𝗱̲𝗻̲𝗲̲𝘀̲𝗱̲𝗮̲𝘆̲: The official 10th anniversary of the Modern Slavery Act receiving Royal Assent.
🔹 𝗧̲𝗵̲𝘂̲𝗿̲𝘀̲𝗱̲𝗮̲𝘆̲: The House of Commons held a 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲 on the Act, attended by 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 (𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀) 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀, discussing both successes and areas where urgent reform is needed.
🔹 𝗙̲𝗿̲𝗶̲𝗱̲𝗮̲𝘆̲: The UK House of Lords had their own debate, following on from their 2024 review of the Act, reinforcing the need for renewed political will and action.
But this week wasn’t just about Parliament. Across the sector, 𝗡𝗚𝗢𝘀 and 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 have been vocal in highlighting their experiences of what works, what doesn't and what needs to change in the fight against modern slavery. And there has been a 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀.
With the anniversary week behind us, modern slavery won't enjoy the same amount of airtime. But the fight against exploitation 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗱𝗲 into the background. There must be renewed urgency and effort.
The next decade must be about 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀. The Modern Slavery Act was groundbreaking in 2015, but there is consensus that the UK has fallen behind global counterparts. The 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲d—and our response must 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.
