Intersectionality was coined by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989 and refers to the interconnected nature of social categorisations such as race, gender and class, which overlap to create unique scenarios of discrimination. It is based on three key ideas: 1. People are affected by belonging to multiple interconnected social groups at the same time 2. The way different social groups interact happens within a context of interconnected systems and structures of power 3.
