🔈 Structures in the Marine Environment will return to Edinburgh on the 22nd and 23rd of May 2024. Join us to hear the latest highlights from our research teams and a review of all the outputs across 4 years of the INSITE programme to date: · Foraging patterns of marine predators; · New applications of the UK autonomous fleet; · Microbial biodiversity and biological connectivity, fish aggregation and blue carbon benefits of Marine Artificial Structures (MAS); · the efficacy of decommissioning strategies; · Artificial Intelligence and eDNA analysis approaches; · and the effects and implications of subsea plastics incorporated into Marine Artificial Structures. We also be looking at the practical application of INSITE science: the policy landscape; drivers and challenges in offshore energy decommissioning and the energy transition to Net Zero. Learn about the effects, benefits and implications of Marine Artificial Structures, and discuss how cutting-edge, applied science can assist decision-makers and support delivery of future policies for sustainable management of our ocean. Registration is OPEN 👇 https://lnkd.in/ebvrXXF3
About us
INSITE – INfluence of man-made Structures In the Ecosystem is a major industry-sponsored project with the overall aim of providing stakeholders with the independent scientific evidence-base needed to better understand the influence of man-made structures on the ecosystem of the North Sea. The initial phase, known as the Foundation Phase has secured research funding of £1.8M and is anticipated to have a duration of three years. Further phases will be developed based on the outcomes from the Foundation Phase.

TotalEnergies have published more than 30 years of monitoring data on the state of the environment around a number of oil & gas platforms and reference locations in the Danish #NorthSea. The data concern #chemicals in the seabed, #biodiversity, #MSFD indicators and more. They can be explored and used by #scientists as well as non-scientists. Would be fantastic if more North Sea players would publish such data in a similarly accessible manner. And maybe help to ensure that #decommissioning takes place in the most nature-friendly way. Great to be at MASTS Scotland Annual Science Meeting last week, sharing findings from the latest INSITE NORTH SEA report, while asking if 'Marine Artificial Structures are an opportunity for nature recovery or another challenge for the future'. Thoroughly enjoyed the stimulating discussion with fellow panelists in the new Energy Transition Forum session too (thanks to Abigail Davies for setting up). Shout out to other #INSITE speakers, @silvia malagoli, Hugo Woodward-Rowe and #ECOWind speakers, @william Macdonald, Emma Tyldesley, for their insightful talks.

A must-read for those interested in environmental effects of offshore structures in marine environment: INSITE NORTH SEA summary findings from the last 5 years of research (2019-2024), from 9 research projects, 6 PhD projects and a data management initiative. Lots to cover but we've distilled down the key scientific messages and related these to pressing marine policy areas, including UK Marine Strategy, British Energy Security Strategy, Marine Net Gain, Fisheries Act and OSPAR 98/3. Massive thanks to the INSITE researchers, programme director team/Howell Marine Consulting, industry partners and NERC: Natural Environment Research Council for bringing this together for us: https://lnkd.in/eEgwRSeT
